Definition Interbeat interval is a scientific term used in reference to the time interval between individual beats of the mammalian heart . Interbeat interval is abbreviated IBI and is sometimes written with a hyphen, inter beat interval. It is also sometimes referred to as beat to beat interval. IBI is generally measured in units of milliseconds. Individual human heart IBI values can vary from as short as 5 milliseconds to as long as 70 milliseconds. In normal heart function, each IBI value varies from beat to beat. This natural variation is known as heart rate variability HRV . However, certain cardiac conditions may cause the individual IBI values to become nearly constant, resulting in the HRV being nearly zero. This can happen, for example, during periods of exercise as the heart rate increases and the beats become regular. Certain illnesses can cause the heart rate to increase and become uniform as well, such as when a subject is afflicted by an infection. IBI recording A number of instruments have been developed for specifically recording individual IBI values. Interval scheduling is a class of problems in computer science , particularly in the area of algorithm design. A list of tasks is given as a set of time intervals for instance, one task might run from 2 00 to 5 00 and another task might run from 6 00 to 8 00. Posed as an optimization problem, the goal is to maximize the number of executed tasks without overlapping the tasks. A request corresponds to an interval of time. We say that a subset of requests is compatible if no two of them overlap in time and our goal is to accept as large a compatible subset as possible. A compatible set of maximum size is called optimal. There are several solutions for this problem that are not optimal. For example, selecting the intervals that start earliest is not an optimal solution because if the earliest interval happens to be really long by accepting it we would have to reject many other shorter requests. Selecting the shortest intervals or selecting intervals with the fewest conflicts is also not optimal. The optimal solution is choosing the earliest finishing time, as in the request that finishes first. One way of proving the optimality of this algorithm is by using the Charging Argument . An important class of scheduling algorithms is the class of dynamic priority algorithms. When none of the intervals overlap the optimum solution is trivial. The optimum for the non weighted version can found with the earliest deadline first scheduling . An interval signal , or tuning signal , is a characteristic sound or musical phrase used in international broadcasting and by some domestic broadcasters. Played before commencement or during breaks in transmission, or most commonly between programmes in different languages it serves several purposes It assists a listener to tune his or her radio to the correct frequency for the station. It informs other stations that the frequency is in use. It serves as a station identifier even if the language used in the subsequent broadcast is not one the listener understands. The practice began in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s and was carried over into shortwave broadcasts. The use of interval signals has declined with the advent of digital tuning systems, but has not vanished.
