Intrusion tolerance is a Fault tolerant design approach to defending information systems against malicious attack. Abandoning the conventional aim of preventing all intrusions, intrusion tolerance instead calls for triggering mechanisms that prevent intrusions from leading to a system security failure. Projects in this area include the MAFTIA project Malicious and Accidental Fault Tolerance for Internet Applications , which developed concepts and prototyped architectures, and the http www.tolerantsystems.org OASIS program, which implemented several intrusion tolerant systems. This snapshot is used to build a database that is saved and usually stored in an external device. When the administrator wants to run an integrity test, he places the previously built database in an accessible place and commands Aide to compare the database against the real status of the system. Should a change have happened to the computer between the snapshot creation and the test, Aide will detect it and report it to the administrator. This is mainly useful for security purposes, given that any malicious change which could ... more details
In computer security , the Linux Intrusion Detection System LIDS is a patch to the Linux kernel and associated administrative tools that enhances the kernel s security by implementing Mandatory Access Control MAC . When LIDS is in effect, chosen file access, all system network administration operations, any capability use, raw device, memory, and I O access can be made impossible even for root. You can define which programs can access specific files. It uses and extends the system capabilities bounding set to control the whole system and adds some network and filesystem security features to the kernel to enhance the security. You can finely tune the security protections online, hide sensitive processes, receive security alerts through the network, and more. LIDS currently support Linux kernel 2.6, 2.4. Unreferenced date December 2009 A protocol based intrusion detection system PIDS is an intrusion detection system which is typically installed on a web server , and is used in the monitoring and analysis of the Communications protocol protocol in use by the computing system. A PIDS will monitor the dynamic behavior and state of the protocol and will typically consist of a system or agent that would typically sit at the front end of a server, monitoring and analyzing the communication between a connected device and the system it is protecting. A typical use for a PIDS would be at the front end of a web server monitoring the HTTP or HTTPS stream. Because it understands the HTTP relative to the web server system it is trying to protect it can offer greater protection than less in depth techniques such as filtering by IP address or port number alone, however this greater protection comes at the cost of increased computing on the web server. Where HTTPS is in use then this system would need to reside in the shim or interface between where HTTPS is Cryptography un encrypted and immediately prior to it entering the Web presentation layer . Monitoring dynamic behavior At a basic level a PIDS would look for, and enforce, the correct use of the protocol. At a more advanced level the PIDS can learn or be taught acceptable constructs of the protocol, and thus better detect anomalous behavior. notability date April 2012 primary sources date April 2012 An application protocol based intrusion detection system APIDS is an intrusion detection system that focuses its monitoring and analysis on a specific application protocol computing protocol or protocols in use by the computing system. Overview An APIDS will monitor the dynamic behavior and state computer science state of the protocol and will typically consist of a system or agent that would typically sit between a process computing process , or group of server computing server s, System Monitoring monitoring and analyzing the application protocol between two connected devices. A typical place for an APIDS would be between a web server and the database management system , monitoring the SQL protocol specific to the middleware business logic as it interacts with the database . Monitoring dynamic behavior At a basic level an APIDS would look for, and enforce, the correct legal use of the protocol. However at a more advanced level the APIDS can learn, be taught or even reduce what is often an infinite protocol set, to an acceptable understanding of the subset of that application protocol that is used by the application being monitored protected. Thus, an APIDS, correctly configured, will allow an application to be fingerprint ed , thus should that application be subverted or changed, so will the fingerprint change. An Anomaly Based intrusion detection system Intrusion Detection System , is a system for detecting computer intrusions and misuse by monitoring system activity and classifying it as either normal or anomalous . The classification is based on heuristics or rules, rather than patterns or signature s, and will detect any type of misuse that falls out of normal system operation. This is as opposed to signature based systems which can only detect attacks for which a signature has previously been created. ref name Wang2004 In order to determine what is attack traffic, the system must be taught to recognize normal system activity. This can be accomplished in several ways, most often with artificial intelligence type techniques. Systems using neural networks have been used to great effect. Another method is to define what normal usage of the system comprises using a strict mathematical model, and flag any deviation from this as an attack. This is known as strict anomaly detection. ref name Sasha2000 Anomaly based Intrusion Detection does have some short comings, namely a high false positive rate and the ability to be fooled by a correctly delivered attack. ref name Sasha2000 Attempts have been made to address these issues through techniques used by PAYL ref name Wang2004 and MCPAD. ref name Perdisci2008 See also Change detection Cfengine cfenvd can be utilized to do anomaly detection RRDtool can be configured to flag anomalies References Reflist refs ref name Wang2004 cite web last Wang first Ke title Anomalous Payload Based Network Intrusion Detection doi 10.1007 978 3 540 30143 1 11 work Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection publisher Springer Berlin accessdate 2011 04 22 ref ref name Sasha2000 http artofhacking.com files phrack phrack56 P56 11.TXT A strict anomaly detection ...&attredirects 0 ref DEFAULTSORT Anomaly Based Intrusion Detection ... be x old it Anomaly based intrusion detection system ru ... more details
Refimprove date July 2011 A host based intrusion detection system HIDS is an intrusion detection system that monitors and analyzes the internals of a computing system as well as in some cases the network packets on its network interfaces just like a Network intrusion detection system network based intrusion detection system NIDS would do . ref name newman2009 This was the first type of intrusion detection software to have been designed, with the original target system being the mainframe computer where outside interaction was infrequent. ref name cn31 8 805 Overview Original research section date July 2011 A host based IDS monitors all or parts of the dynamic behavior and the state of a computer system. Besides such activities like dynamically inspect network packets targeted at this specific host optional component with most software solutions commercially available , a HIDS might detect which program accesses what resources and discover that, for example, a word processor has suddenly and inexplicably started modifying the system password database.
