Students Against Destructive Decisions SADD is an organization whose aim is to prevent accidents from students taking potentially destructive decisions. Mission To begin with, the mission of the SADD chapter was to help young people avoid the dangers of drinking and driving. Today, their mission has expanded to deal with underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, and other destructive decisions. Profile SADD s approach involves young people presenting education and prevention messages to their peers through school and community activities. Projects include peer led classes and forums, teen workshops, conferences and rallies, prevention education and leadership training, awareness raising activities and legislative work. As of 2012, there are nearly 10,000 Middle school, high school, and college chapters with SADD advisors. There are 350,000 students actively participating members in SADD chapters. History SADD was founded by Robert Anastas at Wayland High School in Massachusetts in 1981. He and a group of 15 students developed the SADD concept and the Contract for Life. In 1982, SADD went national with chapters founded throughout Massachusetts, Arizona, North Carolina, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania and Maine. In 1984, Dear Abby and Ann Landers printed the Contract for Life, suggesting to all readers that they request a copy from SADD. ref cite news url http news.google.com newspapers?nid 2209&dat 19840117&id e5orAAAAIBAJ&sjid 1vkFAAAAIBAJ&pg 6832,2617414 date 1984 01 17 publisher The Telegraph accessdate 2012 02 05 ref ref cite news url http news.google.com newspapers?nid 2206&dat 19850523&id 36ImAAAAIBAJ&sjid yQEGAAAAIBAJ&pg 1161,2187357 publisher The Miami News date 1985 05 23 accessdate 2012 02 05 ref The SADD National office was inundated with 8,000 requests per week for six weeks. In finance , an investment strategy is a set of rules, behaviors or procedures, designed to guide an investor s selection of an investment Portfolio finance portfolio . Usually the strategy will be designed around the investor s risk return tradeoff some investors will prefer to maximize expected returns by investing in risky assets, others will prefer to minimize risk, but most will select a strategy somewhere in between. Passive management Passive strategies are often used to minimize transaction cost s, and active management active strategies such as market timing are an attempt to maximize returns. One of the better known investment strategies is buy and hold . Buy and hold is a long term investment strategy, based on the concept that in the long run equity market s give a good rate of return despite periods of Volatility finance volatility or decline. A purely passive variant of this strategy is Index fund indexing , where an investor buys a small proportion of all the shares in a market index such as the S&P 500 , or more likely, in a mutual fund called an index fund or an exchange traded fund ETF . This viewpoint also holds that market timing , that one can enter the market on the lows and sell on the highs, does not work or does not work for small investors, so it is better to simply buy and hold. The smaller, retail investor more typically uses the buy and hold investment strategy in real estate investment where the holding period is typically the lifespan of their mortgage. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Inward investment is the injection of money from an external source into a region, in order to purchase capital goods for a branch of a corporation to locate or develop its presence in the region. Foreign sources, such as transnational corporations or multinational corporation s invest money by introducing new industrial sites to an area, in order to produce more of their product, sometimes in response to changes noticed in that area, such as a growing population or enhanced transport network. Inward investment creates jobs in an area and brings wealth into the economy. Some places do however attract inward investment due to their relative remoteness, for example a company wanting to recruit personnel with relatively common skills might deliberately relocate to an area where wage rates are relatively low, a factor that could arise because of the absence of similar jobs or localised underemployment . Some international investors might seek to take advantage of relatively lax regulation through investing abroad. Some economic development agencies, governments or local authorities are occasionally accused of concentrating on attracting inward investment to such an extent that they neglect to nurture home grown small businesses or entrepreneurs with exciting ideas. As with much marketing effort, a balance is often required to maximise economic progress that is socially and environmentally appropriate. Another aspect of inward investment is financial inward investment activity, which rather than focusing on attracting offshoot operations of overseas companies, focuses on encouraging global focused overseas venture capitalist and hedge fund investment into companies in a country or region. Orphan date February 2009 Expert subject Finance date January 2008 investment function is relation ship between income and investment on business The investment function is a summary of the variables that influence the levels of aggregate investments. It can be formalized as follows I f r, Y,q where r is the real interest rate, Y the GDP and q is Tobin s q. The signs under the variables simply tell us if the variable influences investment in a positive or negative way for instance, if real interest rates were to rise, investments would correspondingly fall . The reason for investment being inversely related to the Interest rate is simply because the interest rate is a measure of the opportunity cost of those resources. If the resources instead of financing the investment could be invested in financial assets, there is an opportunity cost of 1 r , where r is the interest rate. This implies higher investment spending with a lower interest rate. When GDP increases, the output and the capacity utilization increases. This results in an increase of capital investment. At last, a higher Tobins q is represented when the market puts a high value of the installed capital and buys stocks in the firm for a higher price. The firm can then raise more resources per share issued and increase their investments. Investment performance is the returns economics return on an investment portfolio. The investment portfolio can contain a single asset or multiple assets. The investment performance is measured over a specific period of time and in a specific currency. Investors often distinguish different types of return. One is the distinction between the total return and the price return , where the former takes into account income interest and dividend s , whereas the latter only takes into account capital appreciation. Another distinction is between net and gross return. The pure net return to the investor is the return net of all fees, expenses, and taxes, whereas the pure gross return is the return before all fees, expenses, and taxes. Various variations between these two extremes exist. Which return one looks at depends on what one is trying to measure. For example, if one wishes to measure the ability of an investment manager to add value, then the return net of transaction expenses, but gross of all other fees, expenses, and taxes is an appropriate measure to look at since fees, expenses, and taxes other than transaction expenses are often outside the control of the investment manager. Another important distinction is between the money weighted return and the True Time Weighted Rate of Return time weighted return . The former is appropriate if the manager determines the timing of inflows in or outflows from the portfolio. The latter is appropriate when the manager is not responsible for the timing of cash inflows into and cash outflows from the portfolio.
