    The R te ti Monastery is a monastery of Eastern Orthodox Church Eastern Orthodox nuns located in the Berca, Buz u Berca commune in the Buz u County in Romania , on the left bank of the Buz u river . History The monastery was erected by the boyar family of Dragomir, an army captain. The oldest known document relating to it is a donation deed, dated 6 May 1634. At the time, it was a monastery of monks. Because of the lack of monks, the monastery went deserted in 1752, and in 1760 was revived as community of nuns. As of 2006, about 75 nuns live there. Architecture The monastery church was built in a mixed neoclassicism neoclassical and local ecclesiastical style. It was painted in 1843 1844 by Nicolae Teodorescu and his nephew Gheorghe Tattarescu . The bell tower, erected by Dionisie Romano in 1854, was re designed and reduced in height to 18 meters in 1894, when it was rebuilt after an earthquake. The museum The compound includes a museum, near the water well which dates from 1911 . The museum was opened in 1975, in a wide hall painted in 1859 by a monk from the nearby Ciolanu Monastery . The monastery was established in the 11th century. It is rather small with a church, belfry and two other buildings. It is currently uninhabited. The church is a monument of culture. The church dates from the foundation of the monastery in the late 11th century and has a cube shape, 9 metres long, 8 metres wide, 11.20 metres high. The material used was travertine . The altar is a stone monolith and the floor is made of colourful tiles. The church is richly painted inside, with two layers of frescoes, the scarcely preserved early one dating to the 11th century. The better preserved Biblical scenes date from the mid 14th century and include several portraits of donors the first one depicting an unnamed man, his wife Doya and their two children, the second featuring a young man, Vitomir, and a boy, Stoyu. These portraits rank among the oldest and artistically most valuable in the Balkans after the frescoes of the Boyana Church . History According to the legend, the monastery was built in the 13th century 1224 , when Ukraine Ukrainian knyaz Georgi Glozh settled in the area with Ivan Asen II of Bulgaria Ivan Asen II s approval. The knyaz founded a monastery carrying the name of St George , whose icon he had brought with himself. The icon then disappeared numerous times only to be found on a hill not far from the village of Glozhene, which was interpreted by the monks as a divine sign to move the monastery there. This was eventually done near the end of the 14th century. The two monasteries existed in parallel for a short time, being connected by a tunnel to each other, but the tunnel, used many times by Vasil Levski during his secret missions, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1928. The monastery church was erected after the creation of the monastery in the 14th century, but was destroyed by another earthquake in 1913 along with its frescoes. The modern church was constructed in 1951 on the grounds of the old one. It was founded in the 12th century, during the Second Bulgarian Empire , and is dedicated to Archangel Michael . Twice burnt down and pillaged during the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria , the monastery was restored at it present place in 1845. It was the site of several battles during the April Uprising of 1876. The monastery ranks fifth in the hierarchy of the Athonite monasteries. It is one of the twenty self governing monasteries in Athos, and it was dedicated to John the Baptist . The monastery was founded in the 14th century by saint Denys de Korisos, and it was named after him. The library of the monastery housed 804 manuscripts, and more than 4,000 printed books. The oldest manuscripts came from the 11th century. Today the monastery has a community of around 50 monks.
