for the book IrrationalExuberance book refimprove date March 2011 Irrationalexuberance is a phrase used by the then Federal Reserve Board Chairman, Alan Greenspan , in a speech given at the American Enterprise Institute during the Dot com bubble of the 1990s. The phrase was interpreted as a warning that the market might be somewhat overvalued. Overview Greenspan s comment was made on December 5, 1996 emphasis added in excerpt ... Clearly, sustained low inflation implies less uncertainty about the future, and lower risk premiums imply higher prices of stocks and other earning assets. We can see that in the inverse relationship exhibited by price earnings ratios and the rate of inflation in the past. Greenspan s comment was well remembered, although few heeded the warning. The phrase was picked up by Yale University Yale professor Robert Shiller , who used it as the title of his book, IrrationalExuberance book IrrationalExuberance , in 2000. By the mid to late 2000s the losses were recouped and eclipsed by a combination of events, including the 2000s commodities boom and the United States housing bubble . However, the late 2000s recession of 2007 onwards wiped out these gains. IrrationalExuberance is a March 2000 book written by Yale University professor Robert Shiller , named after Alan Greenspan s irrationalexuberance quote. Published at the height of the dot com boom , it put forth several arguments demonstrating how the stock market s were overvalued at the time. Shiller was soon proven right when the Nasdaq peaked on the very month of the book s publication, and the stock markets collapsed right after. The second edition of IrrationalExuberance published in 2005 is updated to cover the United States housing bubble housing bubble , especially in the United States . Shiller writes that the real estate bubble may soon burst, and he supports his claim by showing that median home prices are now six to nine times greater than median income in some areas of the country. He also shows that home prices, when adjusted for inflation, have produced very modest returns of less than 1 year. Shiller proved right again as witnessed by the fall of the United States housing bubble housing bubble which was in part responsible for the Late 2000s recession Worldwide recession of 2008 2009 . In mathematical theory of dynamical system s, an irrational rotation is a function mathematics map math T theta 0,1 rightarrow 0,1 , quad r x x theta mod 1, math where is an irrational number . Under the identification of a circle with R Z , or with the interval 0, 1 with the boundary points glued together, this map becomes a rotation of a circle by a proportion &theta of a full revolution i.e. an angle of 2 &pi radians . Since &theta is irrational, the rotation has infinite Order group theory order in the circle group and the map T sub &theta sub has no periodic orbit s. Moreover, the orbit of any point x under the iterated function iterates of T sub &theta sub , math x n theta n in mathbb Z , math is dense set dense in the interval 0,  1 or the circle. Significance Irrational rotations form a fundamental example in the theory of dynamical system s. According to the Denjoy theorem , every orientation preserving C sup 2 sup diffeomorphism of the circle with an irrational rotation number &theta is topologically conjugate to T sub &theta sub . An irrational rotation is a measure preserving transformation measure preserving ergodic transformation , but it is not mixing physics mixing . DISPLAYTITLE Proof that e is irrational E mathematical constant In mathematics , the Series mathematics series representation of Euler s number e mathematical constant e math e sum n 0 infty frac 1 n math can be used to prove that e is irrational number irrational . Of the many representations of e , this is the Taylor series for the exponential function nowrap e sup &thinsp y sup evaluated at y     1. Summary of the proof This is Joseph Fourier s reductio ad absurdum proof by contradiction . Initially e is assumed to be a rational number of the form a b . We then analyze a blown up difference x of the series representing e and its strictly smaller nowrap b sup &thinsp th sup partial sum, which approximates the limiting value e . By choosing the magnifying factor to be the factorial of  b , the fraction a b and the nowrap b sup &thinsp th sup partial sum are turned into integers, hence x must be a positive integer. However, the fast convergence of the series representation implies that the magnified approximation error x is still strictly smaller than  1. From this contradiction we deduce that e is irrational. Proof Proof by contradiction Towards a contradiction , suppose that e is a rational number . Then there exist positive integers a and b such that e     a b where clearly b     1. Define the number math x b , biggl e sum n 0 b frac 1 n biggr math To see that if e is rational, then x is an integer, substitute e a b into this definition to obtain math x b , biggl frac a b sum n 0 b frac 1 n biggr a b 1 sum n 0 b frac b n ,. math The first term is an integer, and every fraction in the sum is actually an integer because n     b for each term. Irrational Man subtitled A Study In Existential Philosophy is an influential book by William Barrett philosopher William Barrett published in 1958 which served to introduce existentialism to the English speaking world. His writing style is conversational, and he takes time to define terms and give the reader background on philosophical terms and concepts, so this book is aimed at a general reader curious about the topic. The need for a native English speaker to write a text on existentialist philosophy was paramount for its understanding, since most of the primary philosophers in this movement were not native English speakers. While Kierkegaard s works had been translated several decades earlier, the full impact of existential philosophy had not yet been felt in the English speaking world when this book was produced. Being and Nothingness had been available in English for only a couple of years, Walter Kaufmann philosopher Kaufmann s Thus Spoke Zarathustra translation had been out only a few more, and Being and Time had not yet been translated into English. Organization of the book In the four parts of the book, Barrett explains in brief the philosophical tradition to which existentialism was a reaction, and then the main concepts of existential thought. Part one &ndash The Present Age This part shows the impact that existentialism has had on culture even without being a widely known philosophical school of thought. Part two &ndash Sources of Existentialism This part traces the development of philosophy and is a good overview of the subject as it pertains to being, ontology, and metaphysics. This serves to show the contrast between existentialist thought and other forms of philosophy. Part three &ndash The Existentialists The four main philosophical thinkers are introduced, along with their primary thoughts and terminology. The Friday the 13th mini crash refers to the stock market crash that occurred on Friday, October 13, 1989. The crash was apparently caused by a reaction to a news story of the break down of a 6.75 billion leveraged buyout deal for UAL Corporation , the parent company of United Airlines . When the UAL deal fell through, it helped trigger the collapse of the high yield debt junk bond market. The UAL deal unraveled because the Association of Flight Attendants pulled out of the deal when management, in negotiations over an Employee Stock Ownership Plan ESOP designed to fund the leveraged buyout, refused to agree to terms equivalent to those negotiated with other labor groups. ref cite book title Handbook of Airline Economics chapter Doing Battle Flight Attendant Labor Relations in 90s author Borer, David A. editor Darryl Jenkins ed. publisher Aviation Week Grp., Div. of McGraw Hill year 1995 isbn 0 07 607087 5 pages 563&ndash 566 ref The close Moments after the UAL deal fell through, the indices began their plunge.
