Irvin was a prominent agriculturalist and ironmaster in Centre County , Pennsylvania. Irvin represented Pennsylvania s 14th congressional district in the 27th United States Congress , and Pennsylvania s 14th congressional district in the 28th United States Congress . Irvin unsuccessfully ran for governor of Pennsylvania in 1847, losing to incumbent governor Francis Rawn Shunk . In 1855, the Pennsylvania General Assembly General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania chartered the Farmer s High School. The school s trustees decided to build the school on convert 200 acre km2 of Centre County land donated by Irvin. That Farmer s High School is now The Pennsylvania State University . Irvin Hall, one of Penn State s oldest residential halls, is named in his honor. Irvin died in Hecla, Centre County, Pennsylvania, on November 28, 1862. He is buried in Union Cemetery Bellefonte, Pennsylvania Union Cemetery in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania . To this day, it is the longest final in games in the history of the Cincinnati tournament, which started in 1899 and is now the oldest tournament played in its original city in the United States. Alexander Irvin January 18, 1800 March 20, 1874 was a United States Representative from Pennsylvania . He was born in Penns Valley, Centre County, Pennsylvania . He attended the public schools of the area and moved to Curwensville in 1820 and to Clearfield, Pennsylvania in 1826. He engaged in mercantile and lumbering pursuits and was the treasurer of Clearfield County from 1828 to 1830. Irvin was a member of the State senate in 1837 and 1838. He was named the prothonotary of the Pennsylvania Courts of Common Pleas Court of Common Pleas in 1842. He was the recorder of deeds and register of wills of Clearfield County from 1842 to 1844. He was elected as a Whig Party United States Whig to the Thirtieth Congress March 4, 1847 March 3, 1849 . He was not a candidate for renomination. He was a United States marshal for the western district of Pennsylvania from January 17 to September 3, 1850, when he resigned, being succeeded by his brother, William W. Irvin William Irvin . He was named a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872. He then became engaged in mercantile pursuits at Clearfield until his death in 1874. He was buried in the Reed addition to the Old Graveyard.
