It is a brackish lagoon that is part of the Darss Zingst Bodden Chain . Its largest inflow is the Barthe stream. Large parts of the Barther Bodden have a depth of less than 2 meters, so that shipping is very restricted. Today, it is limited almost exclusively to sports boats and pleasure cruisers. To the north is the Zingster Strom , the river like section of the bodden south of Zingst. Here the bodden reaches its greatest depths of over six metres. Northwest lie the two well known islands of Kirr and Barther Oie , both important breeding areas for gull s, tern s, waterfowl and wader s. These rise just a few centimetres above the water level of the bodden and are out of bounds to visitors. The Kirr is used as cattle pasture and, during the autumn migration birds migration is an important stopover for Common Crane crane . It is a bodden , a type of lagoon that occurs in northern Europe especially on the coast of Pomerania . It is around seven kilometres long and five kilometres acrosss at its widest point, but in places it is considerably narrower. It has an area of 28.4  square kilometres. The lagoon is bounded to the north by the Jasmund peninsula, to the east by the spit landform spit of the Schmale Heide and to the south by the main body of the island of R gen, the Muttland . To the northwest near Lietzow it is linked to the Gro er Jasmunder Bodden by a ditch and sluice gate. The two bodden were first separated in 1869 by the construction of an embankment that now carries the Bundesstra e 96 B 96 federal road and the Stralsund Sassnitz railway . This embankment turned the bodden more or less into a lake . The shore of the bodden is quite indented for example, the Pulitz peninsula juts out well into the bodden . This is designated as a nature reserve Germany nature reserve . The water of the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden contains very little salt because it has no direct link to the Baltic Sea. The canal to the Gro er Jasmunder Bodden, which only has a salt content of 0.6 to 0.7  per cent itself, is too small to deliver salt continuously. The bodden is rich in fish. It consists of a string of several lagoons or bodden arranged in an east west direction that are separated from the open sea by the Fischland Dar Zingst peninsula.
