It is the oldest bicycle shop in the Bradford area still in business today. Since 1936 Ellis Briggs have produced lightweight bicycles and continue to do so to this day. Ellis Briggs sprang to fame when the cyclist Ken Russell cyclist Ken Russell won the 1952 Tour of Britain on an Ellis Briggs. History Ellis Briggs Cycles was founded in 1936 by Mr. Leonard Ellis and Mr. Thomas Briggs hence the name Ellis Briggs. When the shop opened in 1936 there was already a bicycle shop in Shipley. That shop was a showroom for Baines, whose factory was based in Idle, West Yorkshire Idle and were famous for producing the Baines Flying Gate. He was featured on the albums Garibaldi Guard , War Birth and Never Mind the Opened Minds . During the 1980s, he played with a number of California n punk bands, most notably the Dischords , who released one EP, Dirty Habits . Briggs was a good friend of U.S. Bombs lead singer, Duane Peters , for many years. After the release of War Birth , and the tour that followed, Briggs left the U.S. Bombs and was replaced by Jonny Wickersham Johnny Two Baggs Wickersham for the follow up album, The World US Bombs album The World . Some notable tracks, other than the Dischords EP and three U.S. Bombs releases, which feature Briggs are Checkpoint Chuck , a demo version of Checkpoint taken from The World , featuring his guitar and backing vocals available on Old Skars and Upstarts and From the Otherside , a solo song, sung by Briggs, also from Old Skars and Upstarts 2001 .
