Isaiah Montgomery May 21, 1847 &ndash March 5, 1924 was the son of Ben Montgomery , and the founder of Mound Bayou, Mississippi . Soon elected mayor, he was an active politician, participating in the 1890 Mississippi state constitutional convention which disfranchised black voters. He was seen as promoting an accommodationist position, a position which would soon be shared by another former slave and eventual black leader Booker T. Washington . Early life and education Born into slavery , Isaiah was afforded an education due to his father s relatively influential position on the Davis Bend plantation. Following the end of the American Civil War , he began a business with his father. It lasted until Ben Montgomery Benjamin Thornton Montgomery s death in 1877. Ben Montgomery had long dreamed of establishing an independent black colony. Career After his father s death in 1877, Isaiah worked to make that dream come true. With his cousin Benjamin T. Green, he bought property in the northwest frontier of Mississippi Delta bottomlands to found Mound Bayou in 1887. Bolivar County was the largest in the Delta. As farmers cleared land, they started cultivating cotton. Montgomery worked to procure blacks protection of the law and to keep their work and lives separate from supervision by whites. Isaiah Blood was born in the Town of Ballston, Saratoga County , New York State on February 13, 1810. He was descended from Richard Blood, one of four immigrants who came to America from England in the 17th century the others being Robert, James, and John . His great uncle John Blood came to the town of Ballston in 1792 with his nephew Sylvester Isaiah s father . Sylvester became a farmer and scythe maker with a business located two miles south of the village present day Brookline Road . The senior Blood decided to enlarge his business by purchasing land next to the Kayaderosseras Creek in an area known as The Hollow. In 1831, Isaiah married Miss Jane E. Gates of Ballston Spa and was given the choice of taking over the scythe shop or a retail store of which Sylvester was part owner. Isaiah chose the scythe shop and moved to The Hollow with his wife. Six years later he took over the business and began increasing production. In 1851, Blood joined up with two other businessmen and built an axe factory a short distance downstream, and within a year became the sole owner. A fire burned down the enterprise, but Blood persevered and built a new factory even larger than the one that was lost. The Scythe Works also burned down in the 1850s and were rebuilt on a larger scale. His organizational skills and ambition were applied in greatly expanding the production of both scythes and axes through the careful development of quality control processes. His tools became well known throughout the Western Hemisphere, and lumbermen were proud to have the name I. Blood stamped on their axes. Isaiah Shavitt was born on July 29, 1925 in Kutno , Poland . He was awarded a Ph. D., supervised by S. Francis Boys Citation needed date July 2011 at Cambridge University , in 1957. He was a professor at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa , Israel from 1962 to 1967. In 1967 he moved to a senior research position at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio Columbus , Ohio , United States . In 1968 he also became a part time faculty member at the Department of Chemistry at Ohio State University and moved there full time in 1981. In 1994 he retired from this position and continued part time as an Emeritus Professor. He is now an Adjunct Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign , USA. Shavitt s landmark achievements include being responsible for two of the first applications of the then newly available computer to chemistry, developing the Gaussian transforn method for calculating multicenter integrals of Slater type orbitals, and the first proposal of contracted Gaussians as basis orbitals. He is one of the authors of the COLUMBUS Ab initio quantum chemistry methods ab initio computational chemistry programs. An International Conference, entitled Molecular Quantum Mechanics Methods and Applications was held in memory of S. Francis Boys and in honour of Isaiah Shavitt in September, 1995 at St Catharine s College, Cambridge . He is a member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science .
