    Issachar Bates 1758 1837 was the most prominent composer of music for the Shakers , ref Chase, pg. 210 ref best known for Come Life, Shaker Life , which he wrote in 1835. ref http www.americanmusicpreservation.com shakermusic.htm American Music Preservation ref Bates was born in Hingham, Massachusetts on January 29, 1758, he moved to the Shaker community in Watervliet, New York in 1803. ref Brewer, pg. 32 ref In 1805, he left from New Lebanon, New York for an extended trip with two other Shaker missionaries, John Meacham and Benjamin S. Youngs. Their travels took them to Kentucky and Ohio where the camp meeting revivals had taken place. Bates was the musician who sang at the first official Shaker meeting in the West at Turtle Creek, Ohio on May 23, 1805. Before he joined the Shakers in 1801, Bates had served in the American Revolution as a young fifer and had learned many of the tunes of that time. He used one of these tunes in his early Shaker hymn, Rights of Conscience. This long ballad hymn of fifteen verses pays tribute to both George Washington and Mother Ann Lee . Bates based his hymn on the popular tune of Washington s time, titled The President s March. Later on Bates became a prominent Shaker church leader, serving mainly at Watervliet, Ohio. He wrote many Shaker spirituals, including an anthem, Mount Zion, and the hymn, Ode to Contentment, with words by Elder Richard Pelham from the Shaker community at North Union, Ohio. Bates returned to New Lebanon, New York in 1835 and the following year completed his lively and informative autobiography. He remained at New Lebanon until his death on March 17, 1837. Roberts was born in Sumner County, Tennessee , and graduated from Furman University , a Baptist school in Greenville, South Carolina. He was known for his erratic behaviour and falling into difficulties with nearly everyone who worked with him , which cost his connection with Southern Baptist Convention. Roberts was the only Baptist known to have influenced Hong Xiuquan , Wade Giles Hung Hsiu ch an , the Hakka people Hakka who led the Taiping Rebellion 1851 1864 against the Qing Dynasty . Hong spent two months studying with Roberts at Guangzhou Canton Guangzhou in 1847. Roberts refused Hong s request for a baptism, perhaps due to a misunderstanding. At the age of 10, he was sufficiently advanced in his training for the rabbinate to follow the elaborate lectures of Jonathan Eybesch tz . Later, Carmoly studied successively at Frankfurt , under the direction of Jacob Joshua , author of Pene Yehoshu a , and at Metz , under Samuel Helman , who conferred upon him the title of rabbi. On returning home, in compliance with the wish of his father, Carmoly began the study of medicine under the direction of Jacob Assur , a physician of Nancy, France Nancy , but had to give it up, being engrossed with his Talmud ical studies. The only benefit he derived from his tutor was a fair knowledge of mathematics, of which he made use later. Carmoly married the daughter of a rich banker named Joseph Raineau . The latter persuaded the bishop of Sulz to create a rabbinate in his see and Carmoly was appointed rabbi of Sulz.
