Environmental issues in Haiti include a severe deforestation problem. In 1923 forests covered nearly 60 percent of the country today they cover less than 2 percent. Until recently the government had done little to combat this problem. Because most Haitians still depend on wood and charcoal as their primary fuel source, energy alternatives are needed to save the forests. The 15 year Environment Action Plan, authorized in 1999, proposed to stop deforestation by developing alternative fuel sources. So far, however, political instability and lack of funding have limited the impact of this reform effort. Deforestation has led to soil erosion , which has decreased agricultural yields and resulted in deadly landslides. Urban environments suffer from a lack of sanitation. Vast slum areas, especially in the capital, Port au Prince , are filled with people living in squalid, unsanitary conditions. Kazakhstan has identified at least two major ecological disaster s within its borders the shrinking of the Aral Sea , and radioactive contamination at the Semipalatinsk nuclear testing facility in fact a large zone south of Kourchatov and along the Chinese border. The Central Asian Regional Environmental Center is located in Kazakhstan, which fosters regional cooperation on environmental issues. Most of Kazakhstan s water supply has been polluted by industrial and agricultural runoff and, in some places, radioactivity . Acid rain Acid rain is a widespread problem throughout Greece, which affects not only agricultural aspects of the environment, as well as affecting the health of Greece s lakes, but also man made buildings too. Acid rain has had a detrimental effect upon the Parthenon and other Ancient Monuments in Athens though a partial reconstruction process has been underway for some time now. Deforestation In the summer of 2008 Greece suffered heavily from arson induced forest fires which stripped the country of a significant proportion of its forest Current policies Greece is a signatory member of the Kyoto Protocol but there has been much sharp criticism from the failure to meet their intended targets for cutting carbon emissions, many have claimed that policies have not been tough enough and the protocol has not been implemented in full owing to large business interests, though the Government denies this. The Government has also attracted sharp criticism about its waste management plans, as has the Mayor of Athens, though there are plans for new plants to be built to deal with the surplus of waste the city has. However, spatial planning is being promoted for the protection of resources from exhaustion, destruction and pollution and is part of a wider Government plan addressing Environmental issues. The Athens Metro has also relieved some pressure in terms of car pollution in Athens and the planned Thessaloniki Metro will undoubtedly help the situation there too. The municipality of Athens has also announced a plan to deal with pollution in the city, though the exact details are as yet known. Refimprove date March 2008 Environmental issues in Turkmenistan are most visible in three significant areas desertification , the drying of the Aral Sea , and chemical pollution. All three of these areas are directly linked to Agriculture in Turkmenistan agricultural practices in the country. Only the Sahara Desert in Africa has a higher rate of desertification than that of Central Asian deserts. Of these, the Karakum Desert and Kyzyl Kum Kyzyl Kum Desert in Turkmenistan grow by hundreds of thousands of acres annually. These conditions persist due to inefficient agricultural irrigation and cattle grazing practices, which have led to the salinization of soil and the removal of ground cover plants respectively. Inefficient irrigation techniques on the Amu Darya also contribute to the continued drying of the Aral Sea. Da oguz Province experiences the most problems due to this drying. Drinking water quality has plummeted, bacteria levels in water have risen, and rates of infant mortality, hepatitis, and illness have risen. Excessive use of fertilizer on cotton and other crops, as well as the use of pesticides such as DDT causes a large chemical pollution problem. Many fertilizers and pesticides have entered groundwater supplies in runoff from farms due to excessive or improper use.
