Contard also Contardus or Contardo , a Franks Frank , was briefly the Duke of Naples in 840 . He was sent by Lothair I , King of Italy , in 839 to aid Andrew II of Naples Duke Andrew II against the warring Lombards of the Principality of Benevento . Fearful of Contard s power and Frankish influence, Andrew promised him his daughter Eupraxia in marriage. Andrew, however, put off the marriage until, in March 840, Contardus rose against him and had him killed, usurping his place. Within three days, the Neapolitans had expelled Contard. Theoctistus lang it Teoctisto was the Duke of Naples during a very confused period in her history. His reign began sometime around 818 and lasted until 821 . On the death of Anthimus of Naples Anthimus , a war of succession broke out in Naples on account of the number of pretenders to the ducal throne. Anthimus had not given his consent to the nobility to elect his successor and so Naples was left without a de jure duke on his death. The populace, seeing the uncertainty of the aristocracy, in a coup d tat , invaded the Praetorium with the support of the upper strata of the military hierarchy, and constrained their rulers to send a delegation to Sicily to solicit a new duke from the patrikios patrician there, who had authority over the Ducatus Neapolitanus . With the appointment of Theoctistus to the vacant post, Naples was once again brought under Byzantine Empire Byzantine influence. Theoctistus was a military man at heart and he opened up a period of wars for the duchy. Nevertheless, he was replaced by another duke from Sicily, Theodore II of Naples Theodore II , who arrived in Naples in 821. Sources Schipa, Michelangelo. Storia del Ducato Napolitano . Napoli, 1895. Anthimus or Anthemus was the Duke of Naples for from 801 until around 818 , when the Patrician post Roman Europe patrician of Sicily reestablished Byzantine Empire Byzantine control over the Duchy of Naples ducatus . Anthimus was, for most of his reign, independent of any higher authority, but he was losing control over his own subject cities, Duchy of Gaeta Gaeta and Republic of Amalfi Amalfi . Early in his reign, the patrician of Sicily requested his aid in fending off the Saracen pirates then ravaging the Sicilian coasts. Anthimus maintained his neutrality and refused. In 812 , the Greek admiral sent to combat these corsairs requested aid from all the inhabitants of the Tyrrhenian coast, including those of Gaeta and Amalfi, who accepted, while Naples refused still. Thus, Naples subjects had declared their independence from her even as Naples was extracting itself from Byzantine suzerainty. Sources Gay, Jules. L Italie m ridionale et l empire Byzantin Livre I . Caesar the Brave Caesarius, lang it Cesario il Valoroso was the admiral of the fleet of the Duchy of Naples during the reigns 840 &ndash 870 AD of his father, Sergius I of Naples Sergius I , and brother, Gregory III of Naples Gregory III . In 846, he commanded the Neapolitan contingent in the Christian victory over the Saracens at Gaeta . In 849, he commaned the Neapolitans at the Battle of Ostia . ref Kreutz, p. 28 ref In May 859, a massive joint expedition of Salerno , Naples , Amalfi , and Suessola marched on Capua . Lando I of Capua Count Lando I was in a paralysis at that time and his son Lando II of Capua Lando II took up arms to defend the city. He defeated the forces sent against them, led by Caesar and Gregory, at the bridge of Teodemondo over the Volturno . Caesar was captured with 800 soldiers and led back to Capua in chains. Erchempert places the battle on 8 May, the day of Michael the Archangel , whose cult was popular among the Lombards . It is therefore significant to Erchempert a Lombard that the Lombard Lando should defeat a largely Greek army on such a day. In 870 Caesar was imprisoned by his nephew, Sergius II of Naples Sergius II , having opposed his closeness to the Aghlabid s, and he died in prison. ref Kreutz, p. 73 ref Sources cite book title Before the Normans Southern Italy in the Ninth and Tenth Centuries last Kreutz first Barbara M. year 1996 publisher University of Pennsylvania Press isbn 9780812215878 Llewellyn, Peter. However, this natural version was rarely, if ever, used as a pigment. Naples yellow was used extensively by the Old Master s and well into the 20th century. The genuine pigment is toxic, and its use today is becoming increasingly rare. Most paints labeled Naples yellow are instead made with a mix of modern, less toxic pigments. The colors of these paints vary considerably from one manufacturer to another.
