The Guideschi , Guidoni , Vitone or Widonids lang fr Widonides , lang de Guidonen or Widonen were an Italian people Italian family of Franks Frankish origin prominent in the ninth century. They were descended from Guy of Nantes , whose origins were Austrasia n. They were an aggressive dynasty, expanding their base of power into the Papal States , ever loyal to the Carolingian Empire Empire and never the Papacy . They were related to the Carolingians in the female line and one even made a claim to the throne of France on that basis. The first member of the family to attain prominence was Lambert I of Nantes Lambert s son Guy I of Spoleto Guy I , who was made duke of Spoleto as Vito di Spoleto by the Emperor Lothair I in 842. He was active in Lotharingia and Italy, even marrying a local Lombards Lombard woman, Itta or Itana , the daughter of Sico of Benevento . His descendants continued to rule Duchy of Spoleto Spoleto until 897. The most famous Guidoni were Guy III of Spoleto Guy III and his son Lambert II of Spoleto Lambert II . Both became kings of Italy and Holy Roman Emperors . Guy IV of Spoleto also became Duke of Benevento . On the assassination of Grimoald IV of Benevento Grimoald IV , Sico succeeded to the princely throne. He made the same empty pledges of tribute and fealty to the Holy Roman Emperor Emperor Louis the Pious which Grimoald had made. Sico tried to extend the principality at the expense of Byzantine Empire Byzantium . He besieged Naples at an unknown date perhaps c .831 , but could not take the city. He did, however, remove the body of the Neapolitan patron saint, Saint Januarius Januarius , who was originally from Benevento. It was also Sico who founded a line of Prince of Capua rulers at Capua by bestowing that ancient fortress on Landulf I of Capua Landulf I as gastald. Guy I died 860 was the Duke of Spoleto from 842. He was the son of Lambert I of Nantes and Adelaide of Lombardy, the eldest daughter of Pepin of Italy . He travelled with his father in 834 in the entourage of Lothair I . He was given the abbey of Mettlach in Lotharingia in 840, when the Emperor Louis the Pious died. Guy married Itta or Ita or Itana , daughter of Sico of Benevento . Their sons were Lambert I of Spoleto Lambert I and Guy III of Spoleto Guy III . In 843, he interfered in the Beneventan civil war on the side of his brother in law Siconulf of Salerno Siconulf . He acted as arbiter several times for high fees, but only Lothair s successor, the Emperor Louis II of Italy Louis II , could end the strife. In 846, he alone succeeded in driving the Saracens out of Latium after their Sack of Rome 846 sack of Saint Peter s Basilica in Rome . In 858, he supported Adhemar of Salerno against the pretensious Prince of Capua count of Capua , Lando I of Capua Lando I , and by his interevention secured the Liri Valley , with Sora, Italy Sora and Arpino taken from the count s brother Landenulf of Teano.
