Hornbill ivory also called golden jade is a precious ornamental material derived from the Helmeted Hornbill Buceros vigil , a large bird of the Malay Peninsula , Sumatra , and Borneo . Many hornbill species have casques , decorative growths on the upper mandible of the bill. In most, the casque has a spongy structure, but in the Helmeted Hornbill it is solid keratin . This material, hornbill ivory, has a texture suggesting ivory but is softer. As it grows it is golden yellow, but the bird rubs its casque on its preening preen gland , whose oily secretion tints the surface of the casque bright red. Native peoples in the Helmeted Hornbill s range, such as the Kenyah people Kenyah and Kelabit people Kelabit , have long carved the casques. In Malaysia, hornbill ivory rings were said to change colour when near poisonous food. sup http www.ivoryhound.com articles hornbill ivory.htm sup The China Chinese encountered the material in the 14th century and it soon became an important trade item at Brunei . Nastos states Pairing a rising superstar of modern jazz with a gentleman known for playing valve trombone and arranging charts might have been deemed by some as a daunting task. Fortunately for the keyboardists, this was a good idea and a marvelous concept, where the two could use the concept of counterpoint and improvisation to an enjoyable means, much like a great chess match. For the listener, you are easily able to hear the difference between ostensible leader Evans in the right channel of the stereo separation, and the accompanist Brookmeyer in the left... Some have called this an effort based more on gimmick and showmanship, but if you agree to listen closely, the depth and substance of Evans and Brookmeyer reveals a lot of soul, invention, and musicians simply having a real good time . ref name Allmusic Nastos, M. It is not made of genuine ivory, but rather made of Hippopotamus bone, bearing an inscription Holy Sacred to the Priest of the House of God YHWH . At the time of its discovery, it was thought to be adorned on the High Priest sceptre within the Holy of Holies . The bone was once considered a genuine artifact proving the existence of Solomon s Temple but has since been found to predate the first temple by 300 to 400 years and the inscription has also been challenged as a modern forgery due to the Hebraic inscription allegedly being made after it had cracked into 1 3 of its original size.
