Edwards was assigned to destroyer USS Shaw DD 68 Shaw in United Kingdom British waters. While escorting troopship HMS Aquitania into Southampton , England , Shaw collided with Aquitania . Lt. Edwards worked on the construction and design of instantaneous Shutter photography shutters and originated the method of intensifying Photographic plate plates with Mercury II iodide mercuric iodide . He was the first, in 1887, to make orthochromatic Photographic plate plates in Britain. Edwards lived at Wistowe House in Hayes, Hillingdon Hayes, Middlesex , which also housed the small factory where for a time he manufactured a special type of Photographic paper printing paper marketed as Wisto .
