He was appointed Naval Aviation Cadet, United States Navy Reserve USNR , 3 September 1935. Following flight training at Pensacola, Florida , he served on board USS Lexington CV 2 Lexington CV 2 and on 1 September 1941, he joined Torpedo Squadron 8 on board USS Hornet CV 8 Hornet CV 8 . Appointed Lieutenant 6 January 1942, Owens was with this squadron when it pressed home a courageous and determined attack against Japanese carriers 4 June during the Battle of Midway . Without the protection of fighters or accompanying dive bombers, the pilots exposed themselves to overwhelming firepower and every plane of the Squadron aviation squadron was shot down. By forcing the enemy ships to maneuver radically and eliminating Japanese air cover, the stark courage and relentless drive of the torpedo pilots, such as Lieutenant Owens, made possible the American victory that followed. JamesC. Allen died 1831 , was an English line engraver from London. He was the son of a Smithfield, London Smithfield salesman. Allen was taught by William Bernard Cooke , and in conjunction with whom he engraved and published in 1821 Views of the Colosseum, from drawings by Major General Cockburn , and in 1825 Views in the South of France, chiefly on the Rhone, from drawings by Peter De Wint , after original sketches by John Hughes artist John Hughes . He likewise engraved a spirited plate of the Defeat of the Spanish Armada, after P. J. de Loutherbourg , for the Gallery of Greenwich Hospital St. Mawes, Cornwall, after Turner, for Cooke s Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England Portsmouth from Spithead, after Stanfield and The Temple of Isis, after Cockburn.
