Motor racing In 1906, Vincenzo Florio created the Targa Florio , one of the oldest car races in the world. The first Targa Florio covered 277 miles through multiple hairpin curves on treacherous mountain roads where severe changes in climate frequently occurred and racers even faced bandits and irate shepherds. The race passed through many small villages, and fans lined up along the roads with no protection from the race cars. The race was suspended in 1978 because of safety concerns.     The Coppa Florio Florio Cup was an automobile race first held in Italy in 1900 as the Coppa Brescia . It was renamed in 1905 when Vincenzo Florio offered the initial 50.000 Italian Lira Lira prize money and a Trophy cup designed by Polak of Paris. The cup was to be awarded to the manufacturer who gained more wins in the first seven races, the first race being held in 1905. The first seven races were all won by different manufacturers, with Peugeot winning the eighth meeting in 1925 and securing the cup with its second win. The race continued after Lucien Rosengart , then a director of Peugeot, offered up the cup for a second time. The Brescia race ran along the route Brescia Cremona Mantova Brescia. Steve Florio April 19, 1949 &ndash December 27, 2007 was an United States American magazine publisher and conglomerateur, was CEO and President of both Conde Nast Publications and The New Yorker , as well as publisher of GQ magazine GQ . Born in Queens, New York , Florio graduated from New York University with a business degree in 1972. In the 1980s he served as publisher of GQ magazine GQ later he went to work at The New Yorker . He was named as President of Conde Nast in 1994 by owner Si Newhouse , and CEO two years later. He stayed as President CEO until January 2004, but remained on contract as vice chairman for three more years. Under Florio s tenure, Conde Nast comprised Vogue magazine Vogue , Vanity Fair magazine Vanity Fair , and The New Yorker , in addition to a dozen or so other titles, specializing in demographic niches. Death Florio, who had a history of heart disease , died Thursday, December 27, 2007, aged 58, at New York Presbyterian Hospital of complications from an earlier heart attack. He was survived by his wife, two children, two brothers, and his mother. One of his brothers, Tom Florio, former Publishing Director of Vogue magazine Vogue , is currently senior adviser for fashion to the office of the chairman at IMG Worldwide .
