He served in the Maine legislature and was elected as a Democratic Party United States Democrat to the United States House of Representatives from Louisiana s 2nd congressional district but died just five weeks into his term. Mann was a member of the Maine House of Representatives 1849 50 and Maine Senate 1851 53 . He was a major in the Union Army during the American Civil War , serving as a paymaster . After the war, he remained in New Orleans as a United States Department of the Treasury Treasury agent. He was elected as part of Louisiana s next congressional delegation after the state was readmitted to representation he took his seat on July 18, 1868, and died on August 26, 1868.     Robert Mann Gallery is a New York based fine art gallery specializing in photography, established in 1985. The gallery s program includes exhibitions of vintage masterworks as well as installations of contemporary photography that contextualize and promote newer movements in the field. The gallery is a member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers AIPAD where Mann has served on the executive board of directors for over 10 years. Gallery owner Robert Mann s career began in 1977 when he started working with veteran dealer Harry Lunn at his gallery in Washington, D.C.,one of the first and few art galleries devoted to the exhibition and sales of fine art photography. After six years, by which time Mann had been promoted to gallery director, Mann decided to move back to New York City to take a job as the director of Light Gallery, legendary for launching the careers of such masters as Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Two years later, in 1985, Mann was ready to strike out on his own. Doing business as fotomann, inc, he started dealing privately on East 76th Street. He was the son of John M. James and Mary G. Poor James. His ancestor John James came to America from Pembrokeshire , Wales in the mid 17th century. He married Zeralda James Zeralda Cole on 28 December 1841. His children were Frank James Alexander Franklin , Robert, Jesse Woodson James Jesse and Susan Lavenia. James was a noted Revivalism revivalist . Probate records show that at his death he owned six slaves and was a commercial hemp farmer. He was among the founders of William Jewell College in 1849. In April 1850, James left his family for California to prospect for gold and preach to the crowds of goldminers during the California gold rush . Shortly after arriving in California in August 1850, he contracted cholera and died on August 18, 1850, in the Hangtown Gold Camp, later known as Placerville . He was buried there in an unmarked grave. James s death left his family saddled with debts and many of his possessions, including one of the slaves, were auctioned off to pay them. His widow Zerelda married Benjamin Simms , a wealthy farmer, on September 30, 1852. This however did not last, they soon separated.
