His father James Thomson mathematician James was professor of mathematics at the University of Glasgow from 1832 onward and his younger brother was to become William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin . James attended Glasgow University from a young age and graduated 1839 with high honors in his late teens. After graduation he served brief apprenticeships with practical engineers in several domains and then gave a considerable amount of his time to theoretical and mathematical engineering studies, often in collaboration with his brother, during his twenties in Glasgow. Life Born in May 1768 at Crieff in Perthshire , was the second son of John Thomson by his wife, Elizabeth Ewan Thomas Thomson chemist Thomas Thomson was his younger brother. James was educated at the parish school, and afterwards went to Edinburgh University . He was licensed to preach by the presbytery of Haddington on 6 August 1793, and frequently assisted his uncle, John Ewan, minister of Whittingham, East Lothian . On 26 August 1805 Thomson was ordained minister of Eccles, Berwickshire . In 1842 he received the honorary degree of D.D. from the university of St. Andrews , and in 1847 he resigned his charge and retired to Edinburgh. Born in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire Hamilton , South Lanarkshire , Thomson was educated at Hamilton Academy . He entered the University of Glasgow in 1940, interrupting his studies to join the army in 1943. Commissioned into the Royal Signals Thomson served as a Lieutenant in India and Malaya and, returning to Glasgow in 1946, graduated BSc in 1947 and PhD in 1951, and later, DSc in 1966. Death Thomson died on July 24, 2001 in Berryville, Virginia and was buried in the Thomson family plot at the Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town, WV with his parents and brothers and two aunts. James Thomson 1788 1850 was an English engraver, known for his portraits. He completed his apprenticeship in engraving and then established himself independently, following the dot and stipple style. His engravings and paintings featured both leading figures of his day and those of previous periods. Life He was baptised on 5 May 1788 at Mitford, Northumberland , where his father James Thomson, who later became vicar of Ormesby in Yorkshire , was then acting as curate . He was sent to London to be articled to an engraver named Mackenzie. After completing and apprenticeship with Mackenzie, he worked for two years under Anthony Cardon , and then established himself independently.
