Details of his early life are sketchy, however it is generally thought that he studied medicine at the University of Leyden , and later in London , where one of his instructors was John Freind 1675 1728 . Beginning in 1723 he practiced medicine in Paris , and was a personal physician to King Louis XV from 1752 until 1770. S nac is remembered for important studies of the heart during an era when cardiology cardiological medicine was rudimentary. In 1749 he published an influential book on cardiology called Trait de la structure du coeur, de son action, et de ses maladies , which systematically dealt with the physiology , anatomy and pathology of the heart. In this treatise he discusses heart disorders and diseases he analyzed personally, as well as diagnoses described by other physicians. Many of S nac s discoveries were derived from autopsy autopsies . He was the first physician to describe the correlation between atrial fibrillation and mitral valve disease , as well as the first to provide a comprehensive study of cardiac hypertrophy . He also performed research of cinchona extract and rhubarb for treatment of cardiac irregularities. He was orphan ed at the age of seven and after having been educated in Paris , he was sent to Saint Malo to study navigation . He became a lieutenant of the French East India Company in 1731. He succeeded in convincing his employer to provide him with two ships and send him on an exploration mission in the South Atlantic . With his ships Aigle and Marie he discovered on January 1, 1739 a tiny island which was named Bouvet Island after him. Shortly afterwards, he had to abandon the expedition because most of his crew had fallen ill and returned to the Cape of Good Hope and later to France . Ten years after his expedition, Bouvet de Lozier was appointed governor of the Mascarene Islands twice, once from 1750 to 1752 and a second time from 1757 to 1763.
