  1. Jean-Henri Pape

Refimprove date May 2009 Image Papelabel.GIF 250px right Jean Henri Pape lang de Johann Heinrich Pape 1787 &ndash February 2, 1875 was a distinguished France French piano maker in the early 19th century. Pape was born in Sarstedt in 1787. He arrived in Paris in 1811 and secured employment with Ignaz Pleyel Pleyel , whose piano workshops he directed for several years. In 1815, he established his own manufacture of pianos, and almost annually for nearly forty years improved them with new inventions. His first grand piano s followed the England English system of John Broadwood Broadwood and Tomkinson, though endowed with mechanical genius it was not long before he modified, then completely changed their principles of construction. Pape concentrated on defects in square and grand pianos caused by the structural gap between the sounding board and wrest plank allowing the hammers to strike the strings the solution of placing actions above the strings had been imagined by Marius, then Hildebrand and finally Streicher in Vienna , but instead of levers and counterweights Pape s arrangement used a coil spring to raise the hammers quickly and with almost no effect on touch. This system was very successful in squares but lacked some lightness and delicacy in grand pianos. The variations he introduced in the forms and actions of upright pianos gave his instruments remarkable power. The work of this skilled maker was rewarded by favorable reports of his instruments from the http www.industrienationale.fr Soci t d encouragement pour l industrie nationale on September 19, 1832 and from Acad mie ... Probably his most important contribution was the development of a method of vaccination against anthrax . However, credit for creation of the anthrax vaccine went to Louis Pasteur , following his celebrated demonstration with the vaccine on sheep at Pouilly le Fort in 1881. At Pouilly le Fort, Pasteur used a vaccine attenuated by potassium dichromate , using a process similar to Toussaint s, who had published a means of attenuation by another antiseptic, carbolic acid . Pasteur never gave proper credit to Toussaint and his discovery. Pasteur s nephew, bacteriologist Adrien Loir 1862 1941 was aware of Toussaint s work with the vaccine, of which he documented in his 1938 treatise A l ombre de Pasteur In the Shadow of Pasteur . From 1881, Toussaint was in declining health, reportedly from a nerve related disease. He died on 3 August 1890 at the age of 43.
