These cave s are not as popular as the Karli , Bhaje caves Bhaje and Bedse Caves , but this place is worth seeing. These are ancient artistic Buddhist caves carved out of a single rock formation of a hill and not many people visit. Archaeologists surmise the caves were carved around the 3rd and 4th century. There are nine rooms for meditation adjoining the GRIHA . An inscription in Br hm script Brahmi script on one of the walls says that the Chaityagriha is dedicated with affection by Gautama Buddha Buddha and Sagha the daughters of Dhapar who was a disciple of Bhadantsingh . The same GRIHA has now taken a shape of Shri Ghorwadeshwar Temple . An easy walk leads to the top where the caves are situated. There are many caves, some of which have deities of Vitthal , Rakhumai and Tukaram Saint Tukaram . It is said that Saint Tukaram used to meditate at Ghorawadi caves and also at places like Durga Tekdi near Nigdi , Bhandara and Bhamchandra near Dehu . The Amboni Caves are the most extensive limestone cave s in East Africa . They are located 8 km north of Tanga, Tanzania Tanga City in Tanzania off the Tanga Mombasa road. The caves were formed about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic age. It covers an area of 234 km . According to researchers the area was under water some 20 million years ago. There are altogether ten caves but only one is used for guided tours. History Amboni Limited, a company which was then operating sisal plantations in Tanga Region acquired the area in 1892. The company notified the British colonial government about the caves who in turn declared the caves a conservation area in 1922. It is not known when the caves were exactly discovered but reports indicate that ethnic groups such as the Segeju , Shambaa Sambaa , Bondei and Digo people Digo who lived near the caves used it for prayers. Twice a year between February and April, and between July and September , licensed collectors risk their lives climbing to the roof of these caves using only rattan ladders, ropes, and bamboo poles precariously attached together.
