Jimmy Henderson born May 20, 1921, Wichita Falls, Texas died June 10, 1998, New York City was an American jazz trombonist and bandleader . Henderson began playing piano at age six and picked up trombone a few years later. By age 13 he had joined a musicians union and was first chair at the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra . He won several trombone competitions by age fourteen and started his own orchestra while still in his teens, in addition to studying at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music . Soon after he toured with the big band s of Hal McIntyre , Jimmy Dorsey , and Tommy Dorsey . In 1954 he moved to Los Angeles , where he did copious work as a session musician for some 20 years. Among his credits in the studios was the soundtrack for Bonanza . From 1957 to 1960, he was also a member of Lawrence Welk s orchestra in which he appeared weekly on the Maestro s television show. Concomitantly he led his own orchestra for fifteen years, including on television programs such as the Emmy Awards . In the 1970s he led the Glenn Miller Orchestra ghost band before retiring in 1980. Jimmy Cooper 1907&ndash 1977 was a hammered dulcimer player from Scotland . Jimmy was born in Coatbridge , Scotland, near Glasgow . He started to play the dulcimer around age twelve, and gained a lot of experience by playing in dance halls and busking in the early 1920s. Over the course of his life he worked at various jobs, including driving buses, driving an ambulance for a children s home, and running a dance band. His repertoire included traditional Irish and Scottish tunes, pop tunes, show tunes, and more. He was discovered as part of the folk revival in the early 1970s, and helped inspire players of the younger generation such as John McCutcheon and Malcolm Dalglish . McCutcheon described Cooper as the most complete dulcimer player he had met. Jimmy Earle Brown 1926 &ndash December 18, 2006 was an United States American trumpet er, saxophone saxophonist and singer , who was the first husband of Rhythm and blues R&B singer Ruth Brown . He was also known as Jumpin Jimmy Brown ref name Dead from his performing style of jumping from the stage into the audience with his trumpet. In his early career he played trumpet with Paul Williams saxophonist Paul Williams and his Hucklebuckers. He played in the house band at the Apollo Theater in Harlem in the 1950s and also recorded for Atlantic Records when Ruth Brown s career started. Later he worked with Etta James , Nat King Cole , was music director for Debbie Reynolds and played lead trumpet with the Count Basie Orchestra. He moved to Minnesota in the 1960s performing in the Twin Cities Minneapolis St. Paul Minnesota St. Paul , and later led a band called Rio Pardo in Duluth, Minnesota Duluth and northern Minnesota in the 1970s and 1980s. He continued performing in Duluth until moving to the Twin Cities in 1994, and performed occasionally until his death. Murphy s father, a bricklayer , was a blues music blues enthusiast, and so the young Murphy grew up listening to musicians such as Lead Belly and Blind Boy Fuller . Murphy had already made it to radio by the middle of the 1940s, appearing on local station WBRC s Happy Hal Burns Show . In 1949 he relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee and auditioned for Dinner Bell , a show on WROL hosted by Archie Campbell . Campbell had Murphy meet Chet Atkins , whom Murphy eventually gave a demo RCA Victor subsequently signed him to a publishing deal and recorded him in January 1951 with just himself on guitar and vocals and Anita Carter playing bass. Murphy s contract only lasted one year all of his singles failed to sell. He continued, however, to perform on WROL, and moved to WNOX in the middle of the 1950s. In 1955, Don Law signed Murphy to Columbia Records and had him record a number of rockabilly sides, but none of these charted, and this contract ended in 1956.
