  1. Littlewood polynomial

for the orthogonal polynomials in several variables Hall Littlewood polynomials In mathematics , a Littlewood polynomial is a polynomial all of whose coefficients are 1 or &minus 1. Littlewood s problem asks how large the values of such a polynomial must be on the unit circle in the complex plane . The answer to this would yield information about the autocorrelation of binary sequences. They are named for J. E. Littlewood who studied them in the 1950s. Definition A polynomial math p x sum i 0 n a i x i , math is a Littlewood polynomial if all the math a i pm 1 math . Littlewood s problem asks for constants c sub 1 sub and c sub 2 sub such that there are infinitely many Littlewood polynomials p sub n sub , of increasing degree n satisfying math c 1 sqrt n 1 le p n z le c 2 sqrt n 1 . , math for all math z math on the unit circle. The Rudin Shapiro polynomials provide a sequence satisfying the upper bound with math c 2 sqrt 2 math . No sequence is known as of 2008 which satisfies the lower bound. 1. Littlewood's law

Littlewood s Law states that an individual can expect to experience miracle s at the rate of about one per month. History The law was framed by University of Cambridge Cambridge University Professor J. E. Littlewood , and published in a collection of his work, A Mathematician s Miscellany it seeks among other things to debunk one element of supposed supernatural phenomenology and is related to the more general Law of Truly Large Numbers , which states that with a sample size large enough, any outrageous thing is likely to happen. Description Littlewood defines a miracle as an exceptional event of special significance occurring at a frequency of one in a million. He assumes that during the hours in which a human is awake and alert, a human will experience one event per second, which may be either exceptional or unexceptional for instance, seeing the computer screen, the keyboard, the mouse, this article, etc. . Additionally, Littlewood supposes that a human is alert for about eight hours per day. As a result a human will in 35 days have experienced under these suppositions about one million events. Accepting this definition of a miracle, one can be expected to observe one miraculous occurrence within the passing of every 35 consecutive days &ndash and therefore, according to this reasoning, seemingly miraculous events are actually commonplace. 1. Littlewood conjecture

In mathematics , the Littlewood conjecture is an open problem As of 2011 lc on in Diophantine approximation , proposed by John Edensor Littlewood around 1930. It states that for any two real number s and , math liminf n to infty n , Vert n alpha Vert , Vert n beta Vert 0, math where math Vert , Vert math is here the distance to the nearest integer. Formulation and explanation This means the following take a point , in the plane, and then consider the sequence of points 2 ,2 , 3 ,3 , ... . For each of these consider the closest Lattice group lattice point , as determined by multiplying the distance to the closest line with integer x coordinate by the distance to the closest line with integer y coordinate. This product will certainly be at most 1 4. The conjecture makes no statement about whether this sequence of values will Convergence mathematics converge it typically does not, in fact. The conjecture states something about the Limit superior and limit inferior limit inferior , and says that there is a subsequence for which the distances decay faster than the reciprocal, i.e. o 1 n in the Big O notation Little o notation little o notation . Connection to further conjectures It is known that this would follow from a result in the geometry of numbers , about the minimum on a non zero lattice group lattice point of a product of three linear forms in three real variables the implication was shown in 1955 by J. W. S. Cassels and Swinnerton Dyer . ref cite journal author J.W.S. ..., E. Lindenstrauss title Invariant measures and the set of exceptions to Littlewood s conjecture ... Weiss.
