Image JohannGeorg Palitzsch.jpg thumb right JohannGeorg Palitzsch JohannGeorg Palitzsch June 11, 1723 &ndash February 21, 1788 was a Germany German astronomer who became famous for recovering Comet 1P Halley better known as Halley s Comet or Comet Halley on Christmas Day, 1758. The periodic nature of this comet had been deduced by its namesake Edmond Halley in 1705, but Halley had died before seeing if his prediction would come true. Raised to become a successful farmer under a strict stepfather, Palitzsch secretly studied as much astronomy as he could from the books he could afford. He learned contemporary astronomy from the book Vorhof der Sternwissenschaft The Forecourt of Astronomy by Christian Pescheck. He learned Latin and, at age 21, inherited the farm, which allowed him to construct his own botanical garden, library, laboratory, and museum. He received support from various benefactors, including the future King. But the wars between Prussia and Austria interrupted his ambitions. Upon his death on February 21, 1788 Palitzsch left behind a library of 3518 books, partly consisting of handwritten copies he had created from scientific works too expensive for him to purchase. A Impact crater crater and a vallis valley on the Moon are named after him. The asteroid 11970 Palitzsch also is named after him. JohannGeorg Meyer 28 October 1813 Bremen , Germany &ndash 4 December 1886 Berlin , commonly known as Meyer von Bremen , was a German Painting painter who specialized in Biblical , peasant , and family scenes. He is associated with the D sseldorf school of painting . In 1841, Meyer opened a studio of his own, but moved to Berlin as his fame increased 1853 . Such pictures as The Jubilee of a Hessian Pastor 1843 , Christmas Eve, Blindman s Buff, The Soldier s Return, The Inundation 1846 , The Repentant Daughter 1852, in the gallery at Bremen , are full of intense sympathy with the simple annals of the poor. After taking up his residence at Berlin, he chose especially scenes from child life, which he rendered with spirited humor. Among his pictures of this kind are The Fairy Tale, Children Playing Blindman s Buff, Grandfather and Grandchild, and others. A third group of his pictures includes those of young women, as single figures or in groups, such as The Tryst and The Love Letter. An example of his ...
