Update EB date January 2011 Johann Karl Wilhelm Vatke , known as Wilhelm Vatke March 14, 1806 April 18, 1882 , Germany German Protestant theology theologian , was born at Behnsdorf , near Magdeburg . After acting as Privatdozent in Humboldt University of Berlin Berlin , he was appointed in 1837 extraordinary professor professor extraordinarius . Vatke was one of the founders of the newer Hexateuch criticism. In the same year in which David Friedrich Strauss David Strauss published his Life of Jesus , Vatke issued his book, Die Religion des Alten Testaments nach den kanonischen B chern entwickelt , which contained the seeds of a revolution in the ideas held about the Old Testament . Since, however, his book was too philosophical to be popular, the author s theories were practically unnoticed for a generation, and the new ideas are now associated especially with the names of Abraham Kuenen and Julius Wellhausen . His other works include Die menschliche Freiheit in ihrem Verh ltniss zur S nde und zur g ttlichen Gnade 1841 , Historisch kritische Einleitung in das Alte Testament 1886 , and Religionsphilosophie 1888 . He was born in Gardelegen son of the barber, Matthias Christian Weinmann. What is known of his early life is that he settled in Regensburg , or Ratisbon as it was known in 1710, and found work as the assistant of an apothecary. Weinmann prospered in Regensburg so that he was able in 1712 to purchase a house and apothecary shop. His wife, Isabella Catharina F rst, was the daughter of an affluent wine merchant. In 1732, shortly after the death of Isabella, he was married again, on this occasion to Christine Catharina Pfaffenreuther, daughter of a town official. His business acumen was such that he was able to purchase an apothecary which had gone bankrupt, and turn it into a profitable shop. After his first marriage, Weinmann became embroiled in a drawn out dispute with local apothecaries and physicians, brought about by his appointment in 1713 as Hospital Apothecary. The dispute was only resolved in 1715 with the intervention of the Town Council. Weinmann was reprimanded and his adversaries were instructed not to trouble him. Weinmann soon resumed his successful career, becoming a town councillor in 1722, a commercial assessor in 1725, and a city assessor in 1733. otheruses unreferenced date November 2007 Ranks of Nobility Ritter German language German for knight is a designation used as a title of nobility in German speaking areas. Traditionally it denotes the second lowest Royal and noble ranks rank within the nobility , standing above Edler and below Freiherr Baron . For its historical association with warfare and the landed gentry in the Middle Ages , it can be considered roughly equal to the titles of Knight or Baronet . As with most titles and designations within the German nobility nobility in German speaking areas, the rank was normally hereditary and would generally be used together with the nobiliary particle of von or zu before a family name. In the Austrian Empire the title of Ritter von would be bestowed upon citizens who deserved more than the plain von but were not considered deserving enough as to be given a baron y as Freiherr . In addition to the described system, some states like W rttemberg and Bavaria introduced orders of merit beginning in the late 18th century which also conferred nobility as Ritter von but kept the title limited to the recipient s lifetime see Military Order of Max Joseph . In heraldry, from the late 18th century a Ritter would often be indicated by the use of a coronet with five points, although not everyone who was a Ritter and displayed arms actually made use of such a coronet.
