    Image Bauhin Jean 1541 1612.jpg thumb 225px right Jean Bauhin. Johann or Jean Bauhin 1541 1613 was a Switzerland Swiss botanist . He studied botany at T bingen under Leonhart Fuchs 1501 1566 . He then travelled with Conrad Gessner , after which he started a practise of medicine at Basel , where he was elected Professor of Rhetoric in 1566. Four years later he was invited to become physician to Duke Frederick I of W rttemberg at Montb liard , where he remained until his death. He devoted himself chiefly to botany. His great work, Historia plantarum universalis , a compilation of all that was then known about botany, was incomplete at his death, but was published at Yverdon in 1650 1651. Bauhin nurtured several botanic gardens and also collected plants during his travels. In 1591, he published a list of plants named after saints called De Plantis a Divis Sanctisve Nomen Habentibus . He was the son of physician Jean Bauhin and the brother of physician and botanist Gaspard Bauhin . He passed his printing business on to his son Hieronymus, and grandson Ambrosius Frobenius . Biography After completing his university career at Basel, where he made the acquaintance of the famous printer Johann Amerbach circa 1440 1513 , Froben established a printing house in that city about 1491, and this soon attained a Europe an reputation for accuracy and taste. In 1500 he married the daughter of the bookseller Wolfgang Lachner, who entered into a partnership with him. He was friends with Erasmus , who lived in his house when in Basel, and not only had his own works printed by him from 1514, but superintended Froben s editions of Jerome , Cyprian , Tertullian , Hilary of Poitiers and Ambrose . His printing of Erasmus Novum Instrumentum omne Novum Testamentum 1516 was used by Martin Luther for his translation.
