His father was dean of students at Pomona College and his mother had also work in academia. While he was English major at Brown University , he also directed, wrote, acted and drew posters and scenery for college productions. After graduating Brown, he entered Yale School of Drama where he was trained by Ming Cho Lee , as well as Donald Oenslager and Jo Mielziner. In New York, he was an assistant of Douglas Schmidt and started making scenery for Broadways. John Shelley Born 28 June 1959 in Birmingham , is an award winning British born illustrator , particularly noted for his work in Japan. Career Shelley studied illustration at Bournville School of Art and Manchester Metropolitan University Manchester Polytechnic under the auspices of Tony Ross . His first children s trade picture book The Secret in the Matchbox published by Andr Deutsch and Farrar, Straus and Giroux was shortlisted for the Mother Goose Award in the UK and won a Parents Choice Award in the US in 1989.
