Brown was born in Berwickshire and after attending the parish school at Duns , he moved to Edinburgh and enrolled in divinity classes at the university of Edinburgh and worked part time as a private tutor. In 1759 he discontinued his theological studies and began the study of medicine and became the private tutor for the William Cullen family. After a dispute with Cullen and the professors of the university, Brown s public lectures contained attacks on preceding systems of medicine, including Cullen s. In 1780 Brown published his Elementa Medicinae , or the Brunonian system of medicine , which for a time was a popular text. In 1786 he went to London to improve his fortunes but died of apoplexy two years later, on October 17, 1788. He moved at age ten to North Carolina where he was separated from his mother. He was moved to Georgia U.S. state Georgia where he worked some years on a cotton farm in Milledgeville under harsh conditions. After several attempts, Brown finally managed to escape and moved around the country and the world, eventually sailing to England in 1850 where he worked as a carpenter in London. He contacted the British and Foreign Anti Slavery Society and in 1855 he dictated the book Slave Life in Georgia A Narrative of the Life, Sufferings, and Escape of JohnBrown, a Fugitive Slave, Now in England to the society s secretary, Louis Alexis Chamerovzow. This is one of the many descriptions of slave s life in the south known as slave narrative s. Brown married a local woman and remained in London until his death, earning a living as a herbalist . He died in London in 1876. Brown 1867 June 19, 1941 was a labor union leader. Born in Canada , he moved to Maine and worked as a joiner at the Bath Iron Works , where he became involved with the labor movement. He became an organizer for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters , then went to the United Mine Workers and was involved with the Colorado conflicts of 1913 and 1914, including the Ludlow Massacre . In 1934 he was living in Woolwich, Maine , where he helped organize Local 4 of the Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America , and later served on the union s board. From 1936 on he wrote a regular column for the Shipyard Worker , the union s newspaper. He died at home, from an accidental discharge of his hunting rifle . The Liberty ship SS John W. John Lothrop Brown November 15, 1815 &ndash January 13, 1887 was a farmer, merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia , Canada. He represented Kings County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1859 to 1863. He was born in Horton, Nova Scotia , the son of Charles Brown and Frances Lothrop. Brown married Elizabeth Whidden. He died in Wolfville, Nova Scotia at the age of 72. His brother Edward L. Brown also served in the provincial assembly.
