Life and works The son and pupil of the eminent composer William Mundy composer William Mundy , he was organist at Eton, and succeeded John Marbeck after his death in 1585 as organist at St George s Chapel, Windsor, Berkshire Windsor . He received a bachelor of music degree from the University of Oxford in 1586, and his doctorate in 1624. In 1585 he was appointed joint organist of Westminster Abbey with Nathaniel Giles , a post he maintained until his death in 1630. Mundy was one of the earliest English Madrigal music madrigalists . He published a volume of Songs and Psalms in 1594, and contributed a madrigal, Lightly she whipped o er the dales , to The Triumphs of Oriana 1601 , a compilation of madrigals by Thomas Morley in honour of Queen Elizabeth I .     John Metcalf Order of the British Empire MBE born 1946 is a United Kingdom British and Canadian composer. He has worked in many forms, including large scale operas, choral and orchestral works, and chamber music, both instrumental and vocal. His music is tonality tonal , and is often rhythmically complex, with much use of polyrhythms . Biography John Metcalf was born in Britain in 1946, at Swansea . He was educated at Dean Close School , Cheltenham . He intended to read classics at university, but he sent a composition to the composer, Alun Hoddinott , who encouraged him to study music at Cardiff University . In 1969 he founded the Vale of Glamorgan Festival , and remained its director until 1985. In 1986 he moved to Canada, to teach on the Music Theatre course at the Banff Centre in Alberta . He was afterwards appointed Artistic Director of the programme and Composer in residence. At Banff he composed his second opera, Tornrak , which draws on Inuit musical traditions and this and other operas were workshopped there. In 1991 he returned to Britain and settled at Llanfair Clydogau, near Lampeter , Ceredigion. He resumed direction of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, which he made a festival presenting the work of living composers only. Alongside his composing work, he was Artistic Director of the Banff Centre , Canada, for ten years, and Director of the Swansea Festival until 2007. It appears that the Durham concerts were in alternate weeks to those organized by his friend Charles Avison in Newcastle, where Garth played the cello. Garth s fame spread and he taught music to leading families in the region, as well as giving organ recitals. A lawyer by training, he is known to have written at least 350 compositions, including at least 39 symphonies. While today known primarily for his music, he also had strong interest in other fields, including astronomy and philosophy , and wrote books about astronomy, music, religion, and geometry . Marsh lived in Dorking, Gosport, Romsey, Salisbury and Canterbury before settling in Chichester in 1787 until his death in 1828.
