He was born at Houstoun House, Linlithgowshire , the third son of Major Norman Shairp of Houstoun, and was educated at Edinburgh Academy and the University of Glasgow . He gained a Shell exhibition to Balliol College, Oxford in 1840. In 1842 he won the Newdigate prize for a poem on Charles XII of Sweden , and took his degree in 1844. During these years the Oxford Movement was at its height. Shairp was stirred by John Henry Newman Newman s sermons, and he had a great admiration for the poetry of John Keble , on whose character and work he wrote an enthusiastic essay but he remained faithful to his Presbyterian upbringing. After leaving Oxford he took a mastership at Rugby School under Archibald Campbell Tait . In 1857 he became assistant to the professor of humanity in the University of St Andrews , and in 1861 he was appointed to that chair. In 1864 he published Kilmahoe, a Highland Pastoral , and in 1868 he republished some articles under the name of Studies in Poetry and Philosophy . In 1868 he was presented to the principalship of the United College, St Andrews, and lectured from time to time on literary and ethical subjects. A course of the lectures was published in 1870 as Culture and Religion . In 1873 Principal Shairp helped to edit the life of his predecessor James David Forbes JD Forbes , and in 1874 he edited Dorothy Wordsworth s Recollections of a Tour in Scotland . Sir JohnCampbell c.1576 c.1642 was a Scottish nobleman and knight, who was the son of Archibald Campbell, and Isabella Grant, a daughter of James Grant, laird of Freuchie and Elizabeth Forbes. Angus MacDonald, 8th of Dunnyveg sold the lands belonging to the Clan MacDonald of Dunnyveg MacDonald s on Islay to Sir JohnCampbell of Cawdor for 6,000 Merk coin merks in 1612. Several young chiefs of Clan MacDonald occupied Dunyvaig Castle and Loch Gorm Castle in defiance of Cawdor. Dunyvaig Castle was retaken by Cawdor and Loch Gorm Castle surrendered on 28 January 1615. He was born in 1834 in Kilmartin , Craignish in Argyllshire to James Campbell and Elizabeth McPherson. About 1873 John came to Redding, Falkirk Redding from Glasgow as a storeman at the Redding Coal Company and then organised the shipping of coal on the Union Canal Scotland Union Canal . He set up his own coal sales business later with sons James and Colin. He also inherited property in Glasgow and a street in Stirling from his wife s family and built each of his five surviving children a house in the area. His first wife, Jane Hodgson, died of consumption in 1873. Three of their children, Margaret, George and Margaret Jane, died young in the 18 months prior to Jane s death. Edward, the eldest, became a seaman and was never heard from again. Edward Campbell was left a significant sum of money by his uncle in Glasgow, but was never traced. JohnCampbell s second marriage, to Janet Morrison, produced six further sons, James, William, John, Robert, Colin and Alexander, who built Craigenhall, a 14 bedroom mansionhouse off the prestigious Camelon Road in Woodlands, Falkirk and Craiglinn on Gartcows Crescent. He was a Master Mason and was fluent in Scottish Gaelic Gaelic . As a Campbell of Craignish , it has been suggested, though never proved, that John s descendants may be the inheritors of the Chieftainship of Clan Campbell of Craignish. John Saxton Campbell ca. 1787 &ndash April 25, 1855 was a seigneurial system of New France seigneur and businessman in Lower Canada . He was the son of Archibald Campbell and Charlotte Saxton and the older brother of notary Archibald Campbell notary Archibald Campbell . He is believed to have come to the town of Quebec City Quebec at a young age his father was involved in the timber trade and came to Quebec after the American Revolution . Campbell took over the operation of his father s business in 1811 and later partnered in the timber business with William Sheppard lumber merchant William Sheppard , who had married his sister Harriet. In 1824 and 1825, Campbell managed sawmill s for John Caldwell . In 1825, he set up his own operation, with wharves, a sawmill and a shipyard at Anse des M res near Quebec. The steamer Royal William of Samuel Cunard s Quebec and Halifax Steam Navigation Company was built at Campbell s shipyard. He was also partners in business with shipbuilder George Black shipbuilder George Black . Campbell was a director of the Quebec Bank and the Quebec Savings Bank. He also helped found the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec . In 1835, he purchased the seigneury of let du Portage.
