Stuart is best known as one of the two clerks the other being James McDougall explorer James McDougall who participated in Simon Fraser explorer Simon Fraser s explorations of present day British Columbia , Canada from 1805 to 1808. After Fraser returned to his work in the Athabaska Department in 1809, Stuart was placed in charge of the New Caledonia Canada New Caledonia District from its headquarters at Fort St. James , located on what would be named after him as Stuart Lake . In this position, Stuart was instrumental in establishing a number of new posts, most notably Kamloops House. He was also instrumental in disrupting competition by John Jacob Astor s Pacific Fur Company . Stuart became a partner in the North West Company in 1813 and a Chief Factor agent factor in the Hudson s Bay Company after its merger with the North West Company in 1821. Stuart is noted for his exploration of Fraser Lake , where he and Simon Fraser explorer Fraser built a post, now known as Fort Fraser . Stuart Lake and Stuart River , both in British Columbia are named after him.     Unreferenced date December 2009 John Baxter died 29 April 1841 was a friend and companion of Edward John Eyre on his crossing of the Nullarbor Plain in 1840 1841. When the party was low on supplies and in desperate need of water, near the coast south of present day Caiguna, Western Australia Caiguna in Nuytsland National Park , Baxter was murdered by Yarry and Joey, two of the Indigenous Australians aboriginies with the group, who took guns and supplies then left only Eyre and Wylie person Wylie to complete the journey. The expeditions was at or past the point of no return and morale was low. Edward John Eyre and Wylie were fortunate to survive the journey to present day Albany. The western Australian Historical Society organised an expedition to locate Baxters remains. His scattered bones were discovered approx. 3  km from the cliffs. His memorial is a concrete pillar erected in 1930 with a brass plaque reading John Baxter, explorer , The Companion Of, John Edward Eyre, Was Killed Here By Natives, April 29th 1841 The memorial can be accessed by 4wd from Caiguna road house. It is approximately 35  km to Baxters memorial and a further 5  km to Baxters Lookout cliffs . The land scape is flat and vegetation stunted. The Lander brothers were sons of a Truro innkeeper. While Richard went to sea at a young age, John learned the printing trade. In 1830 the brothers went on an expedition to determine the course of the Niger River . They landed at Badagry in present day Nigeria , took Hugh Clapperton Clapperton s route to Bussa , then ascended the river for 160 kilometres before descending to explore the Benue River and the Niger Delta . They returned to Great Britain Britain in 1831. Richard returned to the Niger in 1832, but John took a job in a London Customs customs house instead.     Orphan date February 2009 John Bean floruit 1751 57 was an explorer and mariner employed by the Hudson s Bay Company and involved in voyages to the Prince of Wales Fort . Bean was second mate on the Churchill sloop from 1751 to 1753. Part of Churchill s mandate was to explore the coast during her summer trading voyage north among the Eskimo s. No serious attempt was made to accomplish this during these three voyages. After these years, Bean was made master of the sloop and in 1755 and 1756 explored extensively during the summer season. In 1839, he was sent to explore the land west of the Mackenzie River . With the assistance of Alexander Kennedy Isbister , he established Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories Fort McPherson , Northwest Territories on the Peel River Canada Peel River not far from the Mackenzie, and explored the Peel into what is now the Yukon Territory . In 1845, he crossed the mountains into the Yukon River watershed, and went down the Rat River to its confluence with the Porcupine River . The Rat River has been renamed the Rock River Yukon Bell River in his honour. After managing the fur trade at Fort McPherson until 1845, he returned to the Bell River, and Followed the Porcupine to its juncture with the Yukon River , the eventual site of Fort Yukon, Alaska Fort Yukon . He set the stage for the Yukon trade which proved extremely lucrative for the Hudson s Bay Company and for Canada s claim over what is now the Yukon Territory. John Evans was born in Waunfawr , near Caernarfon . In the early 1790s there was an upsurge of interest in Wales in the story of Madog having discovered America, and there were persistent rumours in North America of the existence of a tribe of Welsh Native Americans in the United States Indians , identified with the Mandan . Iolo Morgannwg had originally intended to explore the Missouri to discover these Welsh Indians and John Evans was to have gone with him. However Iolo withdrew from the expedition and John Evans embarked for the United States alone, arriving in Baltimore in October 1792. In the spring of 1793 he made his way to St. Louis, Missouri St. Louis in Spanish Louisiana, where he was imprisoned for a while on suspicion of being a spy. In April 1795 he set off on an expedition with Spain Spanish backing to explore the Missouri and to try to discover a South Pass route to the Pacific Ocean from its headwaters. He found the Mandan in 1796, and spent the winter with them before returning to St. Louis in 1797. However he found no trace of Welsh speakers among them.     John McLeod born 1795 died after 1842 was a Scotland Scottish born explorer of Canada , in his capacity as a fur trade r with the North West Company and Hudson s Bay Company . He is remembered primarily for his explorations of several major rivers of the southwestern Northwest Territories , southern Yukon Territory , and northern British Columbia . McLeod arrived in Montreal , headquarters of the North West Company, in 1816. From there, he was assigned to the Churchill River Hudson Bay Churchill River area as a clerk. Following the merger of the two fur trading companies in 1821, McLeod served at various posts in the Athabasca and Mackenzie River Districts of the Hudson s Bay Company. In 1823, McLeod was assigned as manager of the Fort Simpson fur trading post, located at the junction of the Liard River Liard and Mackenzie Rivers, where he would remain nine years as deputy to the Chief Trader. In 1823 24, McLeod completed explorations of nine mountain ranges adjacent to the South Nahanni River, during which he opened trading relations with the Kaska First Nations First Nation . McLeod s most important expedition took place in the summer of 1831. Leaving Fort Simpson on June 28, 1831, McLeod and eight others became the first known Europeans to ascend the Liard River , a major tributary of the Mackenzie River. This expedition also included a partial ascent of the Dease River and ascent of Frances River to Frances Lake which McLeod mistook for the main branch of the Liard . In sum, McLeod s expedition covered close to 1000  km, and established contact with five First Nations.
