John Charles Thomas born 1950 is an American jurist. Thomas graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts Academic degree degree in American government in 1972. He attended the University of Virginia School of Law and received his Juris Doctor law degree in 1975. Following law school, Thomas joined Hunton & Williams, then styled Hunton, Williams, Gay & Gibson. He was the first African American at the firm. I did not know what to expect. We were not many years from the searing violence that scarred the nation during the days of the Civil Rights movement the Selma March, King s assassination, riots in the streets of major cities all were within recent memory. And so it was a major step to be the first Black lawyer at Hunton & Williams I saw it as part of the integration of our society. He was admitted to the law firm s partnership in April 1982 and was the first Black lawyer in the history of the American South from Virginia to Texas to come to an old line, southern law firm out of law school and go up the line to make partner. In 1983, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Virginia , becoming the first African American and being 32 the youngest person of any race to sit there. John David Phillips QC LLB born 1936 is a distinguished lawyer and retired judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria , the highest court in the Australian state of Victoria. Early life Phillips was born in 1936. He was educated at Scotch College in Melbourne, Victoria and obtained his high school matriculation in 1953. He left his school as equal Dux. Phillips went on to study law at the University of Melbourne, graduating with Honours. He also won the Supreme Court Prize during his studies at university. He left university to undertake articles to become a solicitor of the Supreme Court. He undertook this with William Clarke in the firm of W.J. Clarke & Co. That firm was later incorporated into the firm of Purvis Clarke Richards, and which is now part of the national legal firm Gadens Lawyers. John James Allen September 25, 1797 September 18, 1871 was born at Woodstock, Virginia Woodstock , Shenandoah County, Virginia . His father was a distinguished lawyer and a judge of the circuit court. John Allen received his education at Washington & Lee University Washington College and at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania . He studied law with his father, passed the bar in 1818, and opened his first office in Campbell Courthouse, Virginia , in 1819. A short time later, he moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia Clarksburg where he practiced law for seventeen years. In 1827, he was elected to the Virginia Senate and, in 1834, was Commonwealth s Attorney for the counties of Harrison, Lewis and Preston. At the same time, he was a member of the 23rd United States Congress from March 4, 1833 to March 4, 1835. Being appointed Judge of the seventeenth Circuit in 1836, he moved to Botetourt County, Virginia Botetourt County where he held his first court. In December 1840 Judge Allen was elected a judge of the Supreme Court of Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals and, in 1851, became president when the court was reorganized again. He resigned in April 1865 and retired to private life in Botetourt County where he died in 1871.
