  1. John Lowe (martyr)

No footnotes date June 2010 The beatification Blessed John Lowe 1553 1586 was an English people English Priesthood Catholic Church Catholic priest and martyr . He was born the son of Simon and Margaret Lowe or Low of London in 1553. His father Simon was perhaps the Simon Low who was a merchant tailor and citizen of London. The sources say mysteriously that John had been educated at Douai many years ago . He was a servant at Anchin Abbey for 1578 1579. He entered the English College, Rome , arriving on the 19 November 1581, and was Holy Orders ordained a deacon there on the 19 August 1582, but there is no record of where and when he was ordained a priest. Leaving Rome in September 1583, he was recorded as leaving Reims Rheims for the mission in England on the 20 December 1583. Records show that his absence abroad had been noted by the English government. By this time his father had died, and his mother Margaret was living on London Bridge . Walking with her one evening nearby in May 1586, he talked too unguardedly about his aspirations to martyrdom and was overheard and denounced to the authorities. He was immediately arrested. It is recorded that he was taken to the Clink in London on the 11 May of that year. Given the 1585 Act making it a capital offence to be a Catholic priest in England the terrible sentence of hanging, drawing and quartering was inevitable. It was carried out at Tyburn on the 8 October 1586. His fate was shared by two fellow priests, John Adams martyr John Adams and Robert Dibdale . All three priests were beatified the last stage prior to canonization by Pope John Paul II on the 22 November 1987. John s father was Henry of Oxford, High Sheriff of Oxfordshire sheriff of Oxford . He was a royal clerk and represented Henry II of England King Henry II at a diet held in May 1165 at W rzburg that dealt with the issue of the Antipope Paschal III . Some reports held that John supported the antipope on behalf of Henry II, but John denied this charge. Bishop Josceline de Bohon of Salisbury appointed John Dean of Salisbury , but the appointment was overruled by Pope Alexander III on 8 June 1166 because of John s dealings with the antipope and because some of the cathedral chapter were absent from the election. Archbishop Thomas Becket then excommunicated John on 12 June 1166, and both the chapter and the king appealed to the pope, the king sending John to Rome. John then surrendered the office to the pope and was reappointed by the pope before December of 1166. ref name BHODeanSalis http british history.ac.uk report.aspx?compid 34220 British History Online Deans of Salisbury accessed on 29 October 2007 ref John was elected to the Anglican Diocese of Norwich see of Norwich on 26 November 1175 and was consecrated on 14 ... s ttl title Bishop of Norwich years 1175 1200 s aft after John de Gray s end Deans of Salisbury Persondata NAME John of Oxford ALTERNATIVE NAMES SHORT DESCRIPTION Bishop of Norwich Dean of Salisbury DATE OF BIRTH PLACE OF BIRTH DATE OF DEATH 2 June 1200 PLACE OF DEATH DEFAULTSORT John of Oxford Category ..., I. title Handbook of British Chronology edition Third revised publisher Cambridge University Press ...   more details
