He was originally elected Labour Party UK Labour Member of Parliament MP for Liverpool West Derby UK Parliament constituency Liverpool West Derby at the United Kingdom general election, 1964 1964 general election , but was among the Labour MPs who defected to the new Social Democratic Party UK Social Democratic Party in 1981. At the United Kingdom general election, 1983 1983 general election , he sought re election but came third with 18 of the vote while the Labour candidate Robert Wareing won. It was a time of intense political change and Eric no longer thought that the party he joined was any longer true to the political principles he believed in. He was a member of the Stamps Advisory Committee and Chairman of the Falkland Islands Association he visited the Islands on at least three separate occasions before and after the conflict . He enjoyed photography and gardening and was a keen independent traveller. He married twice and has a son by his first wife and two sons by his second wife, Marjorie Ogden, who died on 24 March 2010.     Ogden Hoffman October 13, 1794 May 1, 1856 was an American lawyer and politician. Hoffman was the son of New York State Attorney General Josiah Ogden Hoffman, Sr. Josiah Ogden Hoffman and Mary Colden Hoffman. He pursued classical studies and graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University Columbia College in 1812. He served for three years in the United States Navy Navy and was warrant officer warranted a midshipman in 1814. He studied law, was admitted to the bar law bar in 1818 and commenced practice in Goshen village , New York Goshen, New York . He was District Attorney of Orange County, New York Orange County from May 1823 to January 1826. Then he returned to New York City and became the law partner of Hugh Maxwell , at the time D.A. of New York. Hoffman was a member of the New York State Assembly , from Orange County in 1826, and from New York County in 1828. He was New York County District Attorney D.A. of New York County from 1829 to 1835. After the removal of the federal deposits from the Second Bank of the United States in 1833, he abandoned Tammany Hall and the United States Democratic party Democratic Party , and joined the Whigs. In 1836, Hoffman defended Richard P. Robinson at his trial for the murder of Helen Jewett , and got his client acquitted. He studied law and was Admission to the bar in the United States admitted to the bar in November of 1791, beginning practice in Newark, New Jersey . He became counselor at law in New Jersey in 1796. He was concerned in the negotiations as to whether Aaron Burr , also from Newark and an executor of his grandfather s will, or Thomas Jefferson became president after the election of 1800, and was widely thought to have tried to get Burr become president. Alexander Hamilton was for a time a legal partner with Ogden and his brother Thomas Ludlow. Ogden with his brothers Thomas Ludlow and Gouverneur developed through the Ogden Land Company huge tracts of northern New York state. Through their position as counsel to the Holland Land Company , David and Thomas Ogden influenced the settlement of western New York, the construction of the Erie Canal , the determination of property law in New York, even political competition in the Republican party. Ogden moved to Hamilton now Waddington , St. Lawrence County, New York, and built a large mansion on Ogden Island. He served as associate judge of the court of common pleas from 1811 to 1815.
