Life Andronikos V Palaiologos was the only known son of Emperor John VII Palaiologos and Irene Gattilusio , daughter of Francesco Gattilusio. At the time of his birth John VII was Regent of the Byzantine Empire for his uncle Manuel II Palaiologos . At an unknown date, probably after his father settled in Thessalonica , Andronikos V was proclaimed nominal co emperor, probably by 1403 1404. He predeceased his father, dying probably in 1407. The imperial status of both John VII and Andronikos V was purely honorary and they were not full fledged co emperors although John VII had reigned as emperor in 1390 and as regent in Constantinople from 1399 to 1403 .     Konstantinos Graitzas Palaiologos Gr. was the commander of the Byzantine Empire Byzantine garrison at Salmeniko Castle near Patras during the invasion of the Despotate of Morea by the forces of Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire in 1460. Graitzas descended from an obscure branch of the Palaiologos family, but showed far more valor than his distant relatives, the siblings and co ruling Despotes Thomas Palaiologos and Demetrios Palaiologos . Whereas the former fled to Modon , Corfu , and finally Rome and the latter surrendered outright to the Sultan, Graitzas maintained his position. He held his redoubt until July 1461, long after the surrender of his lords. Mehmed II Mehmed the Conqueror personally oversaw the attack. The elite Janissaries managed to subdue the town by cutting off its water supply.
