John William Mackail O.M. 26 August 1859 13 December 1945 was a Scottish man of letters and socialist , now best remembered as a Virgil scholar. He was also a poet, literary historian and biographer. He was born in Ascog on the Isle of Bute , Strathclyde . In his early career he worked at the Ministry of Education United Kingdom Ministry of Education 1884 1919 . He was later Oxford Professor of Poetry 1906 1911 , and President of the British Academy 1932 1936 . He was a friend of William Morris , and wrote the 1899 official biography. He also published works on Virgil , the Latin poets, the Iceland ic sagas, Shakespeare and the sayings of Jesus . He married Margaret Burne Jones 1866 1953 , the only daughter of artist and designer Edward Burne Jones . They lived in Kensington and later Holland Park . He became a member of the Order of Merit in 1935. He died in London . The couple s elder daughter, Angela Margaret, and their son, Denis George, are better known as the novelists Angela Thirkell and Denis Mackail . Although his work is now largely forgotten, Greenery Street , a novel of early married life in upper middle class London, was republished by Persephone Books in 2002. Biography He was born in Kensington , London on 3 June 1892 to John William Mackail and Margaret Burne Jones. Educated at St Paul s School London St Paul s School , Hammersmith , he went to Balliol College, Oxford , but failed to complete his degree through ill health after two years. His first work was as a set designer, notably for J. M. Barrie s The adored one and George Bernard Shaw s Pygmalion play Pygmalion 1914 . The outbreak of World War I interrupted this promising start, however, and Denis, not fit enough for active service, worked in the War Office and the Board of Trade . In 1917 he married Diana Granet, only child of the railway manager Sir Guy Granet , who was a director general for railways in the War Office ... and A. A. Milne .     Orphan date September 2008 Unreferenced date November 2008 John William Walton, Jr. 1915 1988 was a noted Tennessee businessman and highway contractor. He founded Walton Construction Company in 1956 and was innovative in construction techniques. He came from a prominent Tennessee and Alabama family as his great grandfathers were John William Walton of Alabama and Governor William Trousdale of Tennessee. His career began as a Ford Dealer in Franklin, Tennessee in 1939. This was ended by the Second World War where he designed aircraft at Vultee in Nashville and worked on the P 38 project. After the war, he founded John W. Walton Jr. Contracting company which was involved in the manufacture of concrete products and excavation. In 1956 he formed Walton Construction Company to bid on Federal Aid projects in the states of Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee. An avid golfer, he also constructed or managed the building of numerous golf courses in Tennessee. Married to Hautense Akin Walton, they had four children, John W.
