DeCourcy Island is one of the Gulf Islands located in the Northumberland Channel approximately convert 16 km mi abbr on south east of Nanaimo , British Columbia and approximately convert 38 km mi abbr on south west of Vancouver , British Columbia . The island was named after Michael deCourcy, captain of the HMS Pylades 1854 HMS Pylades and is about 460 acres just over 185 Hectare ha in area. The island was the home of Brother XII , see also Brother Twelve a mysterious cult figure in the 1920s and of Pirates Cove Marine Provincial Park Pirate s Cove Marine Park . The only access to the island is by boat or floatplane. Tofino Air flies to the island daily. It gives its name to the DeCourcy group of islands which consist, from north to south, of Mudge Island , Link Island , DeCourcy Island, Ruxton Island and Pylades Island . This island group runs parallel to the east coast of Vancouver Island inside the protection of the larger Gabriola Island and Valdes Island . Access by boat from Nanaimo in the north is through Dodd Narrows . From Vancouver, vessels pass between Gabriola Island and Valdes Island through Gabriola Passage. Both Dodd Narrows and Gabriola Passage have strong tidal currents. Gabriola and Valdes Islands protect these smaller islands from the more open Strait of Georgia . Algernon Islay deCourcy Lyons 1922 1993 was a notable Welsh photographer, novelist and linguist. Born in Langland, Glamorgan, Wales on 7 March 1922, the son of Captain John Algernon deCourcy Lyons, M.C. and Doris Ada Campbell Young. In his lifetime, he was normally just called Islay pronounced eye la . Source unspecified Lyons was educated at Bradfield College, Berkshire and Grenoble University. He was at Grenoble when World War II broke out. He made a daring escape over the Pyrenees, was caught and imprisoned in Spain from where he manage to escape and work his way back to England where he joined up and served in the Royal Air Force for the rest of the war. He served first in North Africa and then he was sent to the Far East to learn Japanese in 3 months. He did this with amongst others, Richard Mason, who was a lifelong friend and cousin by marriage. Lyons is portrayed by the character Peter in Mason s book The Wind Cannot Read . The photographs of Lyons illustrate the works of several twentieth century literary figures, including Bryher and Graham Greene . Lyons had been the last lover of the film maker, Kenneth Macpherson , both of them living in the Villa Tuoro on Capri.
