His most famous invention, the metallic life car, rescued thousands of stranded passengers and crew from shipwrecks near the shore. Francis was born in Boston, Massachusetts , and started building boats early in life. He won his first prize in a public competition at age eighteen. As an adult, he worked for the U.S. Government, building life boats for war ships. He was the first person to use iron in the construction of life boats. The government declined to fund his metal boats, so he began his own business on the Jersey Shore , near Long Branch, New Jersey Long Branch . His boats, rafts, life car, and other watercraft became popular in Europe before eventually being adopted in the United States as well.     Francis Joseph Rudolf May 10, 1761 &ndash April 16, 1823 was a judge and political figure in Nova Scotia . He represented Lunenburg County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1811 to 1820. He was born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia , the son of Leonard Christopher Rudolf. In 1803, he married Mary Elizabeth Zwicker. Rudolf served as a justice of the peace and was custos rotulorum from 1819 to 1823. He was named a justice in the Inferior Court of Common Pleas in 1808. He died in Lunenburg at the age of 61.
