In academia , computational immunology is a field of science that encompasses high throughput genomic and bioinformatics approaches to immunology . The field s main aim is to convert immunological data into computational problems, solve these problems using mathematical and computational approaches and then convert these results into immunologically meaningful interpretations. The explosive growth of bioinformatics techniques and applications in the post genomics era has radically transformed immunology research . This has led to a comparable growth in the field of computation immunology, or immunoinformatics. Systems immunology is a recent research field that, under the larger umbrella of systems biology , aims to study the immune system in the more integrated perspective on how entities and players participate at different system levels to the immune function. The immune system has been thoroughly analyzed as regards to its components and function by using a very successful reductionist approach, but its overall functioning principles cannot easily be predicted by studying the properties of its isolated components because they strongly rely on and arise from the interactions among these numerous constituents. Systems immunology represents a different approach for the integrated comprehension of the immune system structure and function based on complex systems theory, high throughput techniques, as well as on mathematical and computational tools. Image Mono und Polymere.svg thumb right 200px Some antibodies form protein structure complexes that bind to multiple antigen molecules. An isotype usually refers to any related proteins genes from a particular gene family . In immunology , the immunoglobulin isotype refers to the genetic variations or differences in the constant regions of the heavy and light chains. In humans, there are nine heavy chain isotypes and two light chain isotypes heavy chain IgA 1, 2 IgD IgG 1, 2, 3, 4 IgE IgM light chain Immunoglobulin class switching can be used to change the class of the heavy chain, but not of the light chain. Isotypes are distinct forms of light or heavy chains which are present in all members of a species, encoded at distinct genetic loci. Kappa and lambda are isotypes of light chains. Delta , gamma 1 1 , etc are isotypes of heavy chains. All isotypes can be readily found in all normal sera. Merge Immunodiagnostics discuss Talk Immunodiagnostics Merger date September 2009 Diagnostic immunology is a collective term for a variety of diagnostic techniques that rely on the specificity of the bond between antibody antibodies and antigen s. Diagnostic immunology is well suited for the detection of even the smallest of amounts of bio chemical substances. Antibodies specific for a desired antigen can be bacterial conjugation conjugated with a radiolabel , fluorescent label, or color forming enzyme and are used as a probe to detect it. Well known applications of this include pregnancy tests, immunoblot ting, ELISA and immunohistochemical staining of microscope slide s. The speed, accuracy and simplicity of such tests has led to the development of rapid techniques for the diagnosis of disease, microbes and even illegal drugs in vivo of course tests conducted in a closed environment have a higher degree of accuracy . Multiple issues cleanup December 2009 orphan December 2009 An experiment in immunology is a method of investigating Immunology immunological responses to antigen s, or detecting and characterizing Antibody antibodies and lymphocyte s. Findings from these experiments can be used to manipulate the immune system and develop drugs to combat immunological disease s. Immunization Experimental immunologist s study responses to simple antigens through immunization , the deliberate induction of an immune response in animal or human subjects. 1 The immunized subject is then monitored for antibody response . This often involves the analysis of antiserum samples that contain specific antibodies against the immunizing antigen, and blood lymphocytes from lymphoid organ s for examination of T cell mediated responses. br However, some antibodies found in antiserum are cross reactive . This means that they bind antigens that have no apparent relationship to the immunogen , and are problematic when antiserum is used to detect antigens that bind specifically to these antibodies. This can be resolved by absorption of these antibodies with their cross reactive antigen, leaving only the antibodies that are specific to the immunogen of interest. It has applications in vaccine development. White blood cells, specifically peripheral blood mononuclear cells including T cells and B cells , from human donars are placed in standard tubes containing specially designed tissue constructs made out of collagen , where they develop into small but functioning immune systems.Up to ninety six individual tubes can be carried on a plate the size of a deck of cards, allowing scientists to use cells from almost a hundred different donors at once. ref name TIME Citation last Guthrie first Catharine author link last2 first2 author2 link title Putting Immunity in a Test Tube newspaper TIME pages date March 27, 2008 url http www.time.com time health article 0,8599,1725904,00.html accessdate 2009 12 22 ref The MIMIC system replaces some steps in the vaccine development process that would otherwise be animal testing performed on animals and offers scientists better speed and flexibility than traditional methods.
