Specifically, coma is defined as a variation in magnification over the entrance pupil . In refraction refractive or diffraction diffractive optical systems, especially those imaging a wide spectral range, coma can be a function of wavelength , in which case it is a form of chromatic aberration . Coma is an inherent property of telescopes using parabolic mirror s. Unlike a spherical mirror , a bundle of parallel rays parallel to the optical axis will be perfectly focused to a point the mirror is free of spherical aberration , no matter where they strike the mirror. However, this is only true if the rays are parallel to the axis of the parabola. When the incoming rays strike the mirror at an angle, individual rays are not reflected to the same point. When looking at a point that is not perfectly aligned with the optical axis, some of the incoming light from that point will strike the mirror at an angle. This results in an image that is not in the center of the field looking wedge shaped. The further off axis or the greater the angle subtented by the point with the optical axis , the worse this effect is.     Ross is the name of a succession of London based lens designers and their company. Andrew Ross 1798&ndash 1859 founded his company in 1830, from 1840 he began producing camera lenses signed A. Ross . During Andrew Ross s lifetime, the company was one of the foremost lens manufacturers and by the 1890s was also making Zeiss and Goerz lenses under licence for sale in the UK and the British Empire. Ross patented a Wide Angle lens design and Zeiss took this further to produce their EWA Protars, before World War 1 Ross and Zeiss worked quite closely together, but at the outbreak of War the British Government put Ross in control of the newly opened Carl Zeiss binocular and optical factory in Mill Hill, London. A 1902 Ross advertisements includes Ross Symmetrical Anastigmats, br Zeiss New Planar and Unar lenses, br Zeiss Convertible Anastigmats, br Goerz Double Anastigmats, etc. Ross also made some cameras from about 1855 to the late 1930s. A range of Ross Standard Reflex cameras is listed with an illustration in the 1935 British Journal Photographic Almanac, the sizes ranged from 3 x 2 up to Half Plate. In the mid 20th century, Ross continued to produce lenses, as well as binoculars, epidiascopes, etc. They had begun supplying lenses for Ensign cameras in the 1930s and after World War II Ross merged with Barnet Ensign, and the company later became Ross Ensign, lenses were also made for other companies such as Micro Precision Products MPP . The piston coefficient is typically expressed in wavelength s of light at a particular wavelength . Its main use is in curve fitting wavefronts with Cartesian polynomials or Zernike polynomials . However, similar to a real V8 engine piston moving up and down in its cylinder, optical piston values can be changed to Bias electrical engineering bias the wavefront phase mean value as desired. As phase values can only vary from zero to 2 , then repeat in either direction termed phase wrapping , changing the piston coefficient changes the zero phase value contour locations across the wavefront. This property is critical to the operation of phase measuring interferometers , which give not only the magnitude but also the sign wikt convexity convexity or wikt concave concavity of a wavefront under test. Piston is physically created in the interferometer by piezoelectric actuators that translate the Fizeau interferometer reference surface along the optical axis by precise fractions of the test wavelength, usually by one quarter of a wavelength. This changes the interferometric fringe patterns and allows direct calculation of the exact wavefront error. Piston and Tilt optics tilt are not actually true optical aberration optics aberrations , as they do not represent or model curvature in the wavefront. Defocus is the lowest order true optical aberration. If piston and tilt are subtracted from an otherwise perfect wavefront, a perfect, aberration free image is formed.
