Invertebrates are a vast and very diverse group of animals that includes sponges , echinoderm s, tunicate s, numerous different phylum phyla of worms, mollusc s, arthropod s and many additional phyla. Single celled organisms or protist s are usually not included within the same group as invertebrates. Invertebrates are 97 of all named animal species , and because of that fact, this subdivision of zoology has many further subdivisions, including but not limited to Arthropodology the study of arthropods , which includes Arachnology the study of spiders and other arachnid s Entomology the study of insect s Carcinology the study of crustacean s Myriapodology the study of centipede s, millipede s, and other myriapod s Malacology the study of mollusk s Invertebrate paleontology the study of fossil invertebrates These divisions are sometimes further divided into more specific specialties. For example, within arachnology, acarology is the study of mite s and tick s within entomology, lepidoptery is the study of butterflies and moth s, and so on. 1. Crèche (zoology)

The Cr che from French in zoology refers to care of another s offspring, for instance in a colony. This term is generally used in the study of bird colonies. Many penguin s form cr ches, in addition to many other birds such as the Canada Goose , Common Eider and Common Shelduck . Among the reptiles, Spectacled Caiman also raise their young in cr ches, one female taking care of her own as well as several others offspring ref Life in Cold Blood http www.bbc.co.uk sn tvradio programmes lifeincoldblood prog summary.shtml 5 Armoured Giants ref . Lions are another notable species to form cr ches. Females within a pride will provide mutual protection and will even nurse each others cubs. However, studies have shown that cubs raised in cr ches tend to have lower feeding rates than if they were raised by one mother. This indicates that in lions, the cr che is a defensive formation. ref University of Minnesota Lion Research Center http www.cbs.umn.edu lionresearch research groupliving.shtml ref References reflist See also Cr che Seabird colony DEFAULTSORT Creche Zoology Category Bird terminology ornithology stub fr Cr che zoologie ...   more details

  1. Sessility (zoology)

unreferenced date November 2010 File Blue mussel clump.jpg thumb Blue mussels, Mytilus edulis , are sessile and exhibit clumping. In zoology , sessility is a characteristic of animal s which are not able to move about. They are usually permanently attached to a solid substrate biology substrate of some kind, such as a part of a plant or dead tree trunk, a rock geology rock , or the Hull watercraft hull of a ship in the case of barnacle s. Coral s lay down their own substrate. Sessile animals typically have a motile phase in their development. Sponge s have a motility motile larval stage, which becomes sessile at maturity. In contrast, many jellyfish develop as sessile polyp s early in their life cycle. In the case of the cochineal , it is in the nymph stage also called the crawler stage that the cochineal disperses. The juveniles move to a feeding spot and produce long wax filaments. Later they move to the edge of the cactus pad where the wind catches the wax filaments and carries the cochineals to a new host. Many sessile animals, including sponges, coral s and hydra genus hydra , are capable of asexual reproduction in situ by the process of budding . Clumping Clumping is a behavior in an animal, usually sessile, in which individuals of a particular species group close to one another for beneficial purposes, and can be seen in coral reef s and cochineal populations.
