Life A native of Le n, Spain Le n in Spain, he first studied jurisprudence at Salamanca , then became a Benedictine and lived as a hermit on the Island of Ponza for five years. He then joined the Dominicans, who had established themselves on Hispaniola Santo Domingo in 1510. Betanzos went there four years later. In 1516 he, with several other Dominicans, wrote a letter to Las Casas on the rapid disappearance of the Indians of the Antilles, concerning the numbers of the aboriginal population, and the excesses thought to have been committed by the Spaniards. In 1526, Betanzos went to Mexico and founded the Dominican province of Santiago de M xico. Tom s de Berlanga almost immediately claimed that it belonged to his newly founded province of Santa Cruz with the provincial seat at Santo Domingo. Life and times Domingo Alfredo Mercante was born in the Flores, Buenos Aires Flores section of Buenos Aires in 1898. His father was a locomotive engineer and senior member of La Fraternidad , the main Rail transport in Argentina railway workers trade union at the time. He completed his secondary education in the Colegio Militar de la Naci n National Military College in 1919 and received further training in the Superior War College, making him a career military officer. He married Elena Caporale and was transferred to the chief Argentine Army base, the Campo de Mayo , where he remained from 1924 to 1940.
