  1. Bitumen of Judea

Refimprove date June 2007 The Photographic processing photographic process known as Bitumen of Judea is quite possibly the oldest modern Photography photographic technique. The technique was first used by French lithographer Nic phore Ni pce in the 1820s. In 1826, using a tarlike material that covered a pewter plate, he took a picture of the countryside near his home. The process required 8 hours of light exposure to record the image ref Hirsch, Robert. Seizing the Light A History of Photography. New York McGraw Hill, 2000. Print. ref . Normally soluble in oil s, the bitumen hardened probably Polymerization polymerized and became insoluble on exposure to light. 1. Marcellus (prefect of Judea)

Marcellus was Prefect Roman Prefect of the province of Judea . He was a friend of Lucius Vitellius ib. 4, 2 , who appointed him after sending Pilate to Rome in 36 or 37 to render account. It may be assumed, however, that Marcellus was not really a governor of Judea, but only a subordinate official of Vitellius. Indeed, this is the only instance where Josephus , in designating the office of Marcellus, uses the expression epimeletes overseer , which is uncommon, and we are not certain whether Marcellus really had the powers of a prefect, or was merely a caretaker. No official act of Marcellus is reported. In 37, he was replaced by Marullus, prefect of Judea Marullus . However, we are given some insight into the changed situation in Jerusalem after the departure of Pilate by the contrast between the trial and execution of Jesus Christ and that of the first Christian Martyr Saint Stephen Acts 7 . In the former the Sanhedrin Jewish Council passed the death sentence but dare not carry it out without the prefect s endorsement and the execution was carried out by the Roman state in Stephen s case the Romans were ignored and the hurried execution was by the old Jewish method of stoning. It would appear that a temporary overseer may have preferred to stay in Caesarea and turn a blind eye to the growing confidence and aggression of the Jewish leaders who had engineered the removal of Pilate after 10 years. 1. Marullus (prefect of Judea)

Marullus was Prefect Roman Prefect of Judea AD 38 41 under Caligula , AD 37 41. He was the seventh governor of this province. He was appointed by the emperor following the recall of Pontius Pilate and the temporary oversight of Marcellus . The period of his prefecture was a stirring and dangerous time due to Caligula s determination to turn the temple at Jerusalem into an imperial shrine with an enormous statue of himself in the guise of Jupiter and the Jews equal determination to accept no such thing, but nothing is recorded of Marcellus part because the important decisions and negotiations were necessarily taken over by The Syrian Governor Legate Publius Petronius . With the statue being constructed in Sidon and two legions of Roman troops waiting on the border of Galilee to enforce the imperial order, war was eventually avoided by the intervention of Agrippa I who dissuaded his friend from such provocation. Soon afterwards Caligula was assassinated and Agrippa was appointed to take Marcellus place, but with the appellation of king. Unreferenced date December 2009 Aristobulus III 53 BC 36 BC was the last scion of the Hasmonean royal house, brother of Herod the Great s wife Mariamne second wife of Herod Mariamne , and paternal grandson of Aristobulus II . He was a favorite of the people on account of his noble descent and handsome presence, and thus became an object of fear to Herod, who at first sought to ignore him entirely by debarring him from the high priesthood. But his mother Alexandra Maccabeus 63 BC 28 BC , through intercession with Cleopatra VII of Egypt Cleopatra and Mark Antony , compelled Herod to remove Hananel from the office of High Priest and appoint Aristobulus instead. To secure himself against danger from Aristobulus, Herod instituted a system of espionage against him and his mother. This surveillance proved so onerous that they sought to gain their freedom by taking refuge with Cleopatra. Their plans were betrayed, however, and the disclosure had the effect of greatly increasing Herod s suspicions against his brother in law. As he dared not resort to open violence, he caused him to be drowned while he was bathing in Jericho . This article was taken from the Jewish Encyclopedia 1903 .
