JurisZarins Zari b. Germany 1945 is an American Latvian archaeologist and professor at Missouri State University , who specializes in the Middle East . Zarins is ethnically Latvian, but was born in Germany at the end of the Second World War . His parents emigrated to the United States soon after he was born. He graduated from high school in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1963 and earned a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Nebraska in 1967. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam before completing his Ph.D. in Ancient Near Eastern Languages and Archaeology at the University of Chicago in 1974. He then served as archaeological adviser to the Department of Antiquities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia before coming to Missouri State in 1978. Zarins has extensive experience in archaeological fieldwork in Saudi Arabia, Egypt , and Oman , and is now involved in a new project in Yemen . He was chief archaeologist for the Transarabia Expedition which made the famous discovery of the ancient city of Ubar in 1992. This made the headline of the New York Times, and it was also named one of the ten most important discoveries of the year by Discover, Time, and Newsweek magazines. Juris Podnieks December 5, 1950 &ndash June 23, 1992 was a Latvia n film director and Film producer producer . He graduated from the USSR Soviet Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography VGIK film school in 1975, after which he started working at the Riga Film Studio . He became a director in 1979. Podnieks first film Cradle won an award at the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film Leipzig DOK Festival . In 1981, his film The Brothers Kokar took the first prize at Kiev Youth Festival. In the same year, his film Constellation of Riflemen won honours in the 17th All State Festival in Saint Petersburg Leningrad and the Latvian Komsomol prize. This was the film that gave Podnieks wide recognition within the Soviet Union . Podnieks gained international recognition thanks to his movie Vai viegli b t jaunam? Is it easy to be young? . The film was an exploration of Soviet youth, in which Podnieks managed to track down and talk to youngsters later convicted for criminal actions. This movie broke box office records in the Soviet Union. As the Soviet Union collapsed, Podnieks cooperated with Great Britain British TV to give them a first hand insight on the events in Soviet Union. Over three years, Podnieks in collaboration with the British, filmed a five part documentary titled Hello, do you hear us? . It showed civil unrest in Uzbekistan , survivors of the 1988 Spitak earthquake earthquake in Armenia , striking workers in Yaroslavl and former residents returning to Chernobyl ....
