  1. Separated at birth

Separated at birth , usually phrased as a question, is a light hearted media device for pointing out people who are unrelated but bear a notable facial resemblance, implying that they are twins who were separated soon after being born and presumably adopted by separate families. The title Separated at Birth? was a trademark of Spy Publishing Partners, the publishers of the now defunct Spy Magazine , a monthly publication that published satire, humor, and investigative journalism from 1986 to 1998. The magazine would pair two carefully selected photos of two unrelated famous persons and the juxtaposition would highlight their physical similarities to humorous effect. There were several Separated at Birth? books issued around the same time, with whimsical comparisons such as Mick Jagger vs. Don Knotts as the fictional film character The Incredible Mr. Limpet ref cite book last first authorlink coauthors title Separated at Birth? publisher Spy Publishing Partners year 1988 location pages url doi id isbn 0385247443 ref Notes and citations reflist See also Doppelg nger Lookalike DEFAULTSORT Separated At Birth Category Human appearance Category English phrases ...   more details

  1. Polar organelle

Unsourced date February 2012 Image Polar Membrane cut.png right thumb Sketch of a longitudinal ultrathin section through a typical motile bacterium bearing a flagellum and surrounding polar organelle at one end of the cell. Polar organelle also referred to in some microbiological literature articles as polar membrane or polar cap is a specialized region of the lipid cell membrane in bacteria l cells, usually located at or near the so called Cell biology pole s e.g. the ends of a cylindrical cell . This region can easily be distinguished from the normal membrane regions in ultrathin sections of embedded bacteria by electron microscopy when the cell membrane is orientated perpendicular to the viewing direction. There, the membrane appears slightly thickened with a finely frilled layer facing the inside of the cell. It is also possible to isolate these polar organelles from the bacterial cells and study them in face view in negative stain negatively stained preparations. The polar organelle bears a fine array of attached particles in hexagonal close packing and these have been shown to possess ATPase activity. Interestingly, the polar organelle is invariably found in close juxtaposition to the points of insertion of the bacterial flagella into the plasma membrane, especially where multiple flagella bases are grouped in a region of the cell membrane. It may thus be inferred that the polar organelle could be of importance in the supply and transfer of energy to the bidirectional molecular rotational motor situated at the base of each individual bacterial flagellum see also Electrochemical gradient . The Canadian postage stamp of Polio Vaccination 1955 2005 , issued September 2, 2005, was a domestic 50 cent stamp commemorating the fight against polio , which Canada Post rightfully described as one of the most feared diseases of the first half of the 20th century . While such an epidemic would immediately suggest something reserved and mournful, Canada Post s Liz Wong commented We didn t want a sombre message. We wanted to focus on the benefits that exist now. It s something to celebrate. The stamp, designed by Toronto graphic designer Debbie Adams of Adams & Associates , features six colourful silhouttes of children, jumping and playing. The children are equal in gender. According to Adams, It illustrates in a positive way that, as a result of the polio vaccine, children are free from the fear of contracting this dehabilitating disease. Artificial legs are thrown off to the side of the stamp, as a juxtaposition. The photo of these legs was by Andrew Layerle . Two and a half million stamps were printed by Canadian Bank Note, with PVA gum and 13 perforations. The stamps are lithography in eight colours, on Tullis Russell Coatings postage stamp paper paper . The stamp was 35&thinsp mm  48&thinsp mm, horizontal. The panes of sixteen stamps have general tagging on four sides. The Official First Day Cover Cancellation was issued in Ottawa, Ontario .
