A descendant of the Duke of Roxburghe Dukes of Roxburghe and cousin of Allan Ebenezer Ker , Robert was born in Dalkeith and educated in Scotland , and came to Vancouver Island in 1859. He was friendly with colonial governor James Douglas Governor Sir James Douglas and John Sebastian Helmcken . Born Fran ois Xavier Roussel in Lorry l s Metz , Moselle , at age fifteen he studied at the Lyc e Condorcet in Paris alongside his friend douard Vuillard , he also studied at the studio of painter Diog ne Maillart . In 1888 he enrolled in the cole des Beaux Arts , and soon began frequenting the Acad mie Julian where Maurice Denis and other students formed the group Les Nabis .
