Orphan date October 2010 citations date May 2011 The Colossal Statues of Akhenaten at East Karnak depict the 18th dynasty pharaoh, Akhenaten also known as Amenophis IV or Amenhotep IV , in a distorted representation of the human form. The statues are believed to be from early in his reign, which lasted arguably from either 1353 to 1336 BCE or 1351 to 1334 BCE. The excavation, begun by Henri Chevrier in 1925, uncovered twenty five fragments of the broken colossi in Eastern Karnak in Thebes, Egypt Thebes , which are now located in the Cairo Museum in Egypt. Description The statues were divided into three categories based on size, the largest of which were 12.75 meters over 41 feet tall and the smallest, 8.55 meters about 28 feet . 1 The pharaoh is depicted with a distorted physique not present elsewhere in the artwork of Ancient Egypt. He is portrayed with a protruding stomach, thin arms, and exaggerated facial features, such as a long nose, hanging chin and thick lips. 2 One statue in particular has been the subject of much debate as it represents the king apparently nude and lacking genitals. 3 There are various theories about the destruction of the statues, one of which suggest that his elder coregent, Amenophis III , had the statues dismantled and covered up. 4 A second theory suggests that Akhenaten himself had the statues torn down with a change of planning in the construction of the Aten temple. 4 Discovery The colossi of Akhenaten were discovered accidentally in 1925 while a drainage ditch was being dug east of the enclosure wall of the Great Temple of Amun . 2 The sandstone statues were inscribed with the name Amenophis IV, and were found fallen prostrate on the ground. The gateway of this temple is at the end of the avenue of sphynxes that ran to the Luxor Temple . In Ptolemaic dynasty Ptolemaic times, Ptolemy III Euergetes constructed a great gateway and enclosure wall for the temple, only the gateway now remains see below . Inscriptions inside the forecourt of the temple were made in the time of Herihor . The hypostyle hall was erected by Nectanebo I , and is not of a great size, inside were found 2 baboons that appear to have been carved in the time of Seti I , and therefore probably belong to the earlier building on the site. Frequently blocks with unmatching and inverted decorations can been seen, showing the amount of reconstruction and reuse of material from the surrounding temple complexes, especially in Ptolemaic dynasty Ptolemaic times. The Beautiful Feast of Opet or Opet Festival was an Ancient Egyptian festival, celebrated annually in Thebes, Egypt Thebes , during the New Kingdom period and later. The statues of the gods of the Theban Triad &mdash Amun , Khonsu and Mut &mdash hidden from sight in a sacred barque were escorted in a joyous procession from the temple of Amun in Karnak, to the temple of Luxor , a journey of around 2 miles, in order to relive their marriage. The highlight of the ritual is the meeting of Amun Re of Karnak with the Amun of Luxor. Rebirth is a strong theme of Opet and there is usually a re coronation ceremony of the pharaoh. In earlier celebrations of Opet, the statues of the god probably proceeded down the avenue of sphinx es that connect the two temples, stopping at specially constructed chapels en route. These chapels would have been filled with offerings, providing for the gods themselves and the attending priests. At the end of the ceremonies in the Luxor Temple, the barques journeyed back by boat to Karnak. In later celebrations, the statues would be transported both to and from Karnak Luxor by boat. The festival was celebrated in the second month of akhet hieroglyph and season Akhet , the Season of the Inundation season of the flooding of the Nile . A royal barque also sailed with the gods vessel, and the ceremonies in the Chamber of the Divine King would reenact the coronation ceremonies and thus confirm kingship. This cult terrace itself was constructed during the time of Ramesses II , but the kings of the Twenty second dynasty of Egypt 22nd to the Twenty sixth dynasty of Egypt 26th Dynasties recorded the height of the Nile on its western side. The inscriptions are invaluable records since they are dated to specific years of a certain king s reign. The cult terrace does not bear any inscriptions from the early years of reign of Taharqa , a period that is known from other sources to have been a time of drought.
