Trenches are located at intervals across a site leaving the rest untouched. A mechanical excavator is used to dig down to archaeological features or natural geological deposits and any archaeology is recorded. No further excavation takes place at this stage. The results of the trial trenching are used to inform any future stage of work which may extend to full Excavation archaeology excavation of the rest of the site if the evaluation reveals significant finds. There is some argument over the sampling strategy to be employed in trial trenching, especially in evaluating sites that are intended for development. Issues such as the effectiveness of certain trench layouts or the percentage of the site to be dug normally around 5 at present are widely discussed. Whether an effective picture of past human activity on a site can be truly estimated through this methods is widely debated. Development can destroy buried archaeology forever and a reliable evaluation methodology is very important. Whilst it is difficult to quantify the number of Type I and type II errors false negative results there have certainly been examples of evaluations suggesting a relatively limited amount of past activity which has had to be upwardly revised during the excavation. In the UK the results of the trial trenching will be used to inform the decision on the need for any further archaeological work to be undertaken prior to development. The term star chamber became a generalized term for a court that was accountable to no one except the chief executive and was used to suppress political dissent or eliminate the enemies of the regime. Secret trials have been a characteristic of almost every dictatorship of the modern era , but even in democratic regimes secret trials have taken place, usually cited by state authorities as necessary for the same reason as those in dictatorships national security. Although the Great Purges in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin are best remembered for the Moscow Trials , show trial s in which the court became a parody of justice, most of the victims of the Terror were tried in secret. Mikhail Tukhachevsky and his fellow Red Army officers were tried in secret by a military tribunal , and their executions were announced only after the fact. The Trial of the Detectives also known as the Turf Fraud Scandal was a police corruption scandal involving three senior officers at Scotland Yard in 1877. Scotland Yard had been called in to investigate a confidence trick in which two Englishmen, Harry Benson and William Kurr, had taken 30,000 from a Parisian woman named Madame de Goncourt using a scam involving horse racing bets. The arrest of Benson and Kurr proved particularly difficult, as they always seemed one step ahead of the pursuing officers. It was later revealed that Inspector John Meiklejohn had been accepting bribes from Kurr to warn him when his arrest was imminent. Two other individuals involved in the investigation, Chief Inspector Nathaniel Druscovich and Chief Inspector Palmer, were also implicated in this corruption. The three stood trial at the Old Bailey and were sentenced to two years in prison. The incident had implications for the organisation of Scotland Yard, as the Superintendent s ability to supervise his subordinates was called into question. Following the Committee of Inquiry, the Detective Branch was reorganised into the Criminal Investigation Department CID .
