for persons with Flannery in their surname or given name Flannery disambiguation Flannery is a bridge convention using an 2 Diams opening bid to show a hand of minimal opening bid strength 11 15 high card points with exactly four spades and five or sometimes six hearts. It was invented by American player William L. Flannery. This convention was introduced because of the awkwardness of describing such a holding, especially with four card major systems. For example, with the hand BridgeHandInline KQ82 AJ643 KJ 54 , if the bidding starts 1 Hearts 1NT denying four spades , the opener cannot rebid 2 Spades , as it would be a Reverse bridge reverse bid showing a stronger hand, 2 Hearts would show a six card suit, and 2 of a minor would show 4 or at least good 3 cards. Thus, the opener cannot safely seek for a 5 3 fit in hearts. Five card major openers are somewhat better placed, because 1NT denies both 3 hearts and 4 spades, so opener may safely pass. However, this convention is also useful when playing five card majors in conjunctions with forcing notrump , to prevent opener from having to respond in a nonsuit after 1 Hearts 1NT when not strong enough to reverse. Responses Responder s only forcing bid is 2NT all other bids are natural. The responses are Pass, 2 Hearts , 2 Spades , 3 Clubs , 3 Diams to play 3NT, 4 Hearts , 4 Spades to play 3 Hearts , 3 Spades invitational 2NT forcing bid. The opener describes his hand more precisely 3 Clubs , 3 Diams 3 cards in the bid suit i.e., 4 5 1 3 and 4 5 3 1 distribution, respectively 3 Hearts 4 5 2 2, 11 13 points 3 Spades 4 5 2 2, 14 15 points with weak minor suit doubletons 3NT 4 5 2 2, 14 15 points, but good minor suit doubletons 4 Clubs ... a 6 card heart suit, for those who play this variant Anti Flannery Anti Flannery is a variation used ... is similar to the basic Flannery. Facts Part and full time fire fighters were being paid differently. Full time firefighters responded to emergencies and were engaged in educational, preventive and administrative tasks, while part time firefighters did not do the administrative work. The Employment Tribunal held that the full time firefighters fell under regulation 2 3 a and the part time firefighters under regulation 2 3 d , nor did they do broadly similar work under regulation 4 a ii . The EAT upheld the Tribunal. The Court of Appeal ref 2005 ICR 84 ref held that they had had the same kind of contract under regulation 2 3 , because the categories were meant to be mutually exclusive. However, the appeal was still dismissed because the firefighters did not do the same or broadly similar work under regulation 4 a . Judgment The House of Lords held by a majority that the two requirements for comparability are that there is the same type of contract being used not the same terms or a broadly similar kind of work being done. The Directive clause 3 2 indicated the broad nature of the inquiry. Four held there was the same contract type, and three held there was the same kind of work. The majority held the firefighters were all in category of regulation 2 3 a . It did not matter under regulation 2 4 a ii that the full time fire fighters did a few extra tasks, because their jobs were still broadly ... more details
